Space Weather Turns into an International Problem NASA News, 16th July 2010
Sometimes a problem is so big, one country cannot handle it alone. That's the message scientists are delivering at today's International Living with a Star (ILWS) meeting in Bremen, Germany, and representatives from more than 25 of the world's most technologically-advanced nations have gathered to hear what they have to say. "The problem is solar storms—figuring out how to predict them and stay safe from their effects," says ILWS Chairperson Lika Guhathakurta of NASA headquarters. "We need to make progress on this before the next solar maximum arrives around 2013." The sun and Earth are separated by 93 million miles of space—a seemingly safe distance. But since the Space Age began, and especially in recent years, there has been a growing realization that 93 million miles really isn't so far apart. Spacecraft and ground-based observatories have shown that Earth is located in the sun's outer atmosphere, buffeted by solar winds and pelted by hail storms of energetic particles. Moreover, the two bodies are actually connected by invisible threads of magnetism. During "reconnection events," which typically happen several times a day, you can trace invisible lines of force all the way from Earth's poles to the surface of the sun. "The Earth and sun are interconnected. We cannot study them separately anymore," says Guhathakurta. [...] If forecasters are correct, the solar cycle will peak during the years around 2013. And while it probably won't be the biggest peak on record, human society has never been more vulnerable. The basics of daily life—from communications to weather forecasting to financial services—depend on satellites and high-tech electronics. A 2008 report by the National Academy of Sciences warned that a century-class solar storm could cause billions in economic damage. Comment: So are NASA saying that after over 20 years of increasing Space Weather and a whole armada of spacecraft dedicated to watching the Sun, solar scientists still have not worked out how to mitigate the impact of Space Weather from the Sun? Oh well, it looks like humans we are going to be forced to adapt to the new conditions, as the New Cosmic Age has arrived! Also, this headline is misleading because Space Weather became an international effort after the 1989 Great Magnetic Storm, as I documented in my book Tuning the Diamonds. NASA-funded researchers are monitoring a big event in our planet's atmosphere. High above Earth's surface where the atmosphere meets space, a rarefied layer of gas called "the thermosphere" recently collapsed and now is rebounding again.

"This is the biggest contraction of the thermosphere in at least 43 years," says John Emmert of the Naval Research Lab, lead author of a paper announcing the finding in the June 19th issue of the Geophysical Research Letters (GRL). "It's a Space Age record."
The collapse happened during the deep solar minimum of 2008-2009—a fact which comes as little surprise to researchers. The thermosphere always cools and contracts when solar activity is low. In this case, however, the magnitude of the collapse was two to three times greater than low solar activity could explain.
"Something is going on that we do not understand," says Emmert. [...]
One possible explanation is carbon dioxide (CO2).
When carbon dioxide gets into the thermosphere, it acts as a coolant, shedding heat via infrared radiation. It is widely-known that CO2 levels have been increasing in Earth's atmosphere. Extra CO2 in the thermosphere could have magnified the cooling action of solar minimum.
"But the numbers don't quite add up," says Emmert. "Even when we take CO2 into account using our best understanding of how it operates as a coolant, we cannot fully explain the thermosphere's collapse."
Comment: Hmmm... This is a problem that is facing many different Earth sciences. Even if scientists think they understand what's going on, another set of parameters appear which makes it seem like the rules have changed. A blast of the brightest X-rays ever detected from beyond our Milky Way galaxy's neighborhood temporarily blinded the X-ray eye on NASA's Swift space observatory earlier this summer, astronomers now report. The X-rays traveled through space for 5-billion years before slamming into and overwhelming Swift's X-ray Telescope on 21 June. The blindingly bright blast came from a gamma-ray burst, a violent eruption of energy from the explosion of a massive star morphing into a new black hole. Comment: Hmmm... Yet, another record breaking blast from deep space that swamps the equipment designed to pick up this energy! What's more, astronomers are claiming it was 1.5 times as bright as GRB 080319B that hit the planet in March 2008 from half way across the Universe, and could have been seen for 30 seconds with the naked eye! As, I am recording this growing list of intergalactic record breakers, this will be investigated, but it's more proof that the planet is being hammered by intergalactic energies. During its second attempt, the “Progress” supply ship has successfully docked at the ISS. The vehicle brought 2,6 tons of cargo to the ISS, including food, fuel, equipment, as well as presents for the crew. The first attempt at docking was aborted because of an electronic malfunction on Friday at 4:50 pm. The failure, however, posed no threat to the crew, since the ISS is well stocked.
There is always a certain reserve of supplies on the ISS, shared Rene Pischel, head of the Moscow office of the European Space Agency.

A signal astrophysicists once dismissed as contamination of X-ray observations could actually improve forecasts of dangerous space weather that threatens Earth.
Charged particles within the solar wind give off so-called soft X-rays when they collide with the magnetic field that shrouds Earth. The soft X-rays have longer wavelengths and lower frequencies than their hard X-ray cousins.
This signal was once dismissed as local cosmic noise that interfered with space observatory surveys of hot, distant objects such as supernovas, until some scientists realized its significance for Earth.
Comment: Another reminder of the curse of ignorance and arrogance, which is particularly worrying trait for a scientist. In fact, I can't imagine how people would think that when something comes along that they don't understand, it must be rubbish.... Mind you, some of the most stupid, uneducated people I have ever come across in my life, still thought they knew more than others... As I say, the mixture of ignorance and arrogance is a curse... National power grids could overheat and air travel severely disrupted while electronic items, navigation devices and major satellites could stop working after the Sun reaches its maximum power in a few years.
Senior space agency scientists believe the Earth will be hit with unprecedented levels of magnetic energy from solar flares after the Sun wakes “from a deep slumber” sometime around 2013, The Daily Telegraph can disclose.
Comment: The Sun is quiet but NASA are still warning, I now think the evidence is pointing to something triggering the Sun and hence the increased levels of concern about the cosmic environment from NASA et al. in recent months. Regardless, it's the impact on Earth that is now worrying authorities. Well, in my opinion, it's our reliance on electricity and oil etc that is the problem. We don't have to be vulnerable, but if the lights go out now in our modern technological world, most will not survive, yet there are extremely poor parts of the world that would not even notice that the sun had knocked out national power grids and life would go on. The power brokers have so far choked off alternative and 'free' energy options and now we will see how they cope when their preferred money making and controlling choice is also put to the test. Apocalyptic thought has a tradition that dates to the Persian prophet Zoroaster in the 14th century BC. Recently, anxiety has grown over the prediction of the end of the world in the Mayan calendar.
It's true that the Mayan odometer will hit zeros on 21 December 2012, as it reaches the end of a 394-year cycle called a baktun. But this baktun is part of a larger 8,000-year cycle called a pictun, and there's no evidence that anything astronomically untoward will happen as the current baktun slides into the next. However, that hasn't stopped the feverish speculating that sells books and cinema tickets.
Comment: Well, the oil spill has certainly frightened a lot of people, but generally speaking, the threat from space is more likely and especially now as we have a strong magnetic cloud of dusty plasma seeping into our solar system with effects that we don't fully understand mixed in with extreme Space Weather. The Mayan Elders are predicting three days of darkness, it took me a while to fully understand this, but now I have realised that this scenario is quite possible. Earth and space are about to come into contact in a way that's new to human history. To make preparations,authorities in Washington DC are holding a meeting: The Space Weather Enterprise Forum at the National Press Club on June 8th.
Richard Fisher, head of NASA's Heliophysics Division, explains what it's all about:
"The sun is waking up from a deep slumber, and in the next few years we expect to see much higher levels of solar activity. At the same time, our technological society has developed an unprecedented sensitivity to solar storms. The intersection of these two issues is what we're getting together to discuss." [...]
"I believe we're on the threshold of a new era in which space weather can be as influential in our daily lives as ordinary terrestrial weather." Fisher concludes. "We take this very seriously indeed."
Comment: NASA knows something that most people don't know... if you want to know more, read about Space Weather on this blog, but it's not actually the Sun that is the problem it's the cosmic environment that effects the Sun and that is changing rapidly. Joint USAF/NOAA Report of Solar and Geophysical Activity Geophysical Activity Summary 27/2100Z to 28/2100Z: The geomagnetic field has been quiet to unsettled. An interplanetary shock was observed at the ACE spacecraft at 28/0203Z. Boulder magnetometer observed a 33 nT sudden impulse at 28/0259Z, the activity is most likely due to the arrival of the CME observed on May 23. Geophysical Activity Forecast: The geomagnetic field is expected to be at predominately unsettled levels with a chance for active periods on day one (29 May) as the CMEs from 23-24 May continue to be geo-effective. Unsettled to active levels are likely are on days two and three (30-31 May) due to the arrival of a recurrent coronal hole high speed stream. In addition, there is a slight chance for isolated minor storm periods during the high speed stream interval. Comment: Geomagnetic Storm! Well, I downloaded the NICT movie for 28/05/2010 because I knew a CME had been predicted to arrive and it looks like we had several separate hits as the billion tons of plasma arrived in waves, as charged particles travel at different speeds dependent on mass. However today, the current images of the magnetosphere are weird, and according to Spaceweather.com WE HAVE A BREACH. What that means in real terms is the that Earth has dropped her normal shielding and we are completely open to the cosmic and galactic elements. All quite interesting really. I deal with superginormously ridiculous energies, velocities, and sizes all the time as an astronomer. You get used to it after a while… then something like this’ll slap you upside the head: a star that exploded more than 5000 years ago launched two epic bullets. One is a cloud of gas screaming away at thousands of kilometers per second, and the other is the cinder of the star itself, an octillion-ton cannonball blasting through space in a totally different direction.
Comment: What's interesting about this article is that it is obvious that Phil Plait realises just how extreme and fierce Magnetars are, but his audience just don't get the implications. Magnetar SGR 0526-66 was the first to be seen in 1979, but not the first to be seen in outburst mode. Our planet is now getting regularly walloped by these celestial monsters in x-rays and gamma rays and some even suspect gravitational waves, but the general public can't really appreciate the implications and I am sure Plait wonders why he is even bothering to enlighten so few. However, what really fascinates me is Plait prides himself on being a skeptic, but his writing about Magnetars is far from skeptical, more like someone who is shocked and awed. Scientists from the Space Research Centre of the Polish Academy of Sciences, Los Alamos National Laboratory, Southwest Research Institute, and Boston University suggest that the ribbon of enhanced emissions of energetic neutral atoms, discovered last year by the NASA Small Explorer satellite IBEX, could be explained by a geometric effect coming up because of the approach of the Sun to the boundary between the Local Cloud of interstellar gas and another cloud of a very hot gas called the Local Bubble. If this hypothesis is correct, IBEX is catching matter from a hot neighboring interstellar cloud, which the Sun might enter in a hundred years.
Is the Sun going to enter soon a million-degree galactic cloud of interstellar gas?
Comment: These days, I can hardly believe what is coming out of the astronomical community and the true significance. I don't know whether different groups of astronomers are using different terminology or whether there is an effort to confuse but from what I have read, we are ALREADY in a transition zone and about to enter the Galactic Cloud or G Cloud that seems to be hosting some interesting features that I have already commented on. Since my intentions have always been to point out the significance for evolutionary change, the warning at the end of this article will be repeated here: "This might mean that the Solar System could enter the million-degree Local Bubble cloud as early as the next century. "Nothing unusual, the Sun frequently traverses various clouds of interstellar gas during its galactic journey," comments Grzedzielski. Such clouds are of very low density, much lower than the best vacuum obtained in Earth labs. Once in, the heliosphere will reform and may shrink a little, the level of cosmic radiation entering the magnetosphere may rise a bit, but nothing more. "Perhaps future generations will have to learn how to better harden their space hardware against stronger radiation," suggests Grzedzielski."If you have done the research like I have, you will know that the astronomical estimate of a few hundred years or next century is unreliable, other astronomers usually add the caveat "But maybe tomorrow!" However, metaphysical warnings for those interested in spiritual evolution, encouraging people to sort out their energy fields now, seem like good advice. With the increased radiation, humans are going to mutate EXACTLY as some Mayan Elders and metaphysical sources have predicted. The obvious issue is how well people are prepared to follow the new cosmic template that will guide our evolutionary destiny. The solar flares and sunspots throw massive clouds of electrically charged gas at the Earth which cause power surges and throw compasses into disarray.
The weather in space has been through an unprecedented calm period in the last century but the researchers believe we could be entering a more volatile period.
[...] Dr Alan Thomson, the leader of the team, who will present their findings at the National Astronomy Meeting in Glasgow, said: "A major objective is to shed light on the impact of both everyday and extreme space weather on our technologies and therefore to be better aware of the risk.”
Comment: Once again, British scientists are sounding the alarm. As we have been told by modern Mayan Elders, who actually understand how to interpret their 20 different calendars which include cosmic and galactic cycles. 2012 is what the Grandfathers call the "A Return to the beginning" and the start of the JOB AJAW – the Fifth Sun, a cycle of 5,200 years which will be about the ether or space. The increasing concern about space weather coincides with the 25 years of transition mentioned by indigenous sources and Mayan Elders. Starting in 1987, this period of transition was well noted within the metaphysical community, and serious deliveries of New Energy arrived notably in 1989 with The Great magnetic Storm, which actually produced 195 solar flares in 13 days. Since that time, our cosmic and galactic shielding has been deteriorating allowing in increasing levels of cosmic and galactic energies. Meanwhile, there were other megablasts from galactic sources taking place, that have been kept very quiet in the usual media outlets. Some metaphysical sources have made some major claims, which I now believe have to be interpreted in terms of the impact of Space Weather. A coronal mass ejection hit Earth's magnetic field at approximately 12:30 UT on April 11th. The impact sparked a G2-class geomagnetic storm with auroras over Scandinavia, Scotland, Canada and northern-tier US states such as Maine, Michigan and Wisconsin.
"It was great," says Martin McKenna of Maghera, Northern Ireland. "On Sunday night, my friend Conor McDonald and I watched the Northern Lights for 3 hours from the Glenshane Pass." They made this self-portrait using a Canon 450D:
"Vertical rays of green light shot as high as 20o above the horizon," says McKenna. "Quite a show!"
And it may not be over. The interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) near Earth is pointing south, an orientation that favors strong geomagnetic activity. High-latitude sky watchers should remain alert for auroras tonight.
Comment: I saw that the magnetosphere was reacting yesterday, but quite frankly, it is taking lots of hits and many blasts do not seem to be related to specific solar activity. copy: The most powerful geomagnetic storm since December 2006 struck the Earth on Monday, a day earlier than expected.
On 3 April, the SOHO spacecraft spotted a cloud of charged particles called a coronal mass ejection (CME) shooting from the sun at 500 kilometres per second. This velocity suggested the front would reach Earth in roughly three days.
"It hit earlier and harder than forecast," says Doug Biesecker of the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Space Weather Prediction Center in Boulder, Colorado.
Fortunately, the storm was not intense enough to interfere strongly with power grids or satellite navigation, but it did trigger dazzling auroras in places like Iceland (pictured).
Such storms highlight the uncertainty in the arrival times of CMEs, which can easily be 15 hours off predictions, Biesecker says. Better modelling of the solar wind, which can accelerate CMEs en route to Earth, could reduce the uncertainty.

A sharp gust of solar wind hit Earth's magnetosphere today, April 5th, at approximately 0800 UT. The impact sparked a strong geomagnetic storm (Kindex=7). High-latitude sky watchers should be alert for auroras.
Comment: We are experiencing high levels of geomagnetic activity and a very fast solar wind which normally averages 300 km/s but at the moment it is at 700-800km/s. Earthquakes were being predicted but due to USGS warnings, the factors are piling up for a bigger earthquake in the California region. Spaceweather alert – first “red alert” in 6 years Professor Leif Svalgaard: This is indeed the first serious magnetic storm of cycle 24. It is still only a moderate storm [K-index = 7; a really big storm has K-index = 9; the K-index is approximately logarithmic: a doubling of the storm amplitude adds another unit to the K-index]. The storm is caused by a CME in the form of a helical magnetic flux-rope still rooting in the Sun at both ends. At the front end of the approaching rope the field was pointing North, so not much reconnection happened and the effect was minor. The back-end had Southward pointing field and that feed energy into the magnetosphere. Because the event was short-lived and the magnetic field modest within the rope, the storm did not develop into an extreme event. There is an interesting twist to this: The North-South component of the heliomagnetic field [HMF] when it impacts the Earth controls largely the strength of the interaction. U.S. regulators on Tuesday announced a broad investigation into automotive computer systems and software, which have come under scrutiny because of sudden acceleration and other reports involving some Toyota Motor Corp. cars.
An examination of Toyota's problems will be conducted by experts from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, while the National Academy of Sciences, which advises the government, will undertake a separate, 15-month study into the use of computer technology in cars, U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood said.
Toyota has said there is no evidence that software or electronic systems are responsible for sudden acceleration in its cars. The company "repeatedly and rigorously" tests its software and has subjected it to outside review, a spokesman said.
Electronics have led to some of the biggest safety breakthroughs in vehicles, such as antilock brakes and stability control. Software controls an ever-growing variety of functions in cars, including braking and accelerating. Increasingly, cars include software that links these systems to do things like parallel park the vehicle or remember the seat positions, temperatures and radio stations preferred by different drivers.
"Ninety percent of all innovation in cars today is driven by software," said Ingolf Krueger, an associate professor of computer science and engineering at the University of California in San Diego.
No surprise then that software is sometimes to blame when things go wrong. While Toyota has received most of the attention, other car makers have had software-related incidents.
Comment: Well, some ignoranti have tried to mock all talk of cosmic rays being the cause of the failure of Toyota electronics, but now NASA are getting involved. Of course, we know that NASA are well aware that Earth is being bombarded with the highest levels of cosmic rays since the start of the space age and this is expected to get worse. People worry about car satefy but there is no consideration that humanity is faced with rapid evolutionary change caused by DNA mutations. Comment: According to NOAA's Space Weather Prediction Center, no space weather storms were expected for the 25th March, but something is hitting the Earth's magnetosphere with some heavy force! What's more this plus the subsequent images created ever 20 minutes, looks like huge chunks of the magnetosphere is missing? Since these images and data are created by Japanese scientists with ACE satellite data, which I think is better than anything NASA et al. have to offer, it's clear that the Earth's cosmic defences are in a terrible state. Update The pressure images are the most bizarre I have ever seen over the two hour period following the hit captured above. Update 2 OK, I don't know what the hell is happening today, there must have been some serious breaches, totally amazing.... 1- Take a look! & 2- Take a look!. Researchers from the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute and Earthwatch met in Panama from Mar. 1-5 to present mid-term research results from the HSBC Climate Partnership, a five-year initiative to identify and respond to the impacts of climate change. The program is supported financially by HSBC and involves a global team of bank employees -- 'climate champions' -- in vital forest research. The first-ever research program of its kind has so far:
* Found rapid increases in tree growth in the forest around the Smithsonian's Environmental Research Center (SERC) in Maryland, USA, a finding attributed to increased atmospheric carbon dioxide and longer growing seasons, published in PNAS. * Proposed a novel biodiversity theory relating stress and seed-size published in PNAS. * Examined the effects a changing climate in forests is having on white-tailed deer, mice and even mosquitoes. * Addressed the lack of a reliable method for estimating the carbon storage capability of secondary forests on a landscape scale by assessing how measurements from airborne LiDAR and other remote sensing technologies relate to ground-based measurements. * Reviewed how human disturbance changes the way forests take up carbon in diverse environments. Comment: There is no mention of cosmic rays here, but according to NASA, cosmic rays are at a space age high and expected to increase to new levels not seen in hundreds of years. What's more we are told that the Earth's magnetic field might be getting read to flip, but it is currently full of rifts and periodically disappears anyway (daylight side), so we lose all protection against galactic cosmic rays. Like a story line straight out of a George Lucas film, reports are surfacing that cosmic rays may be responsible for the dangerous cases of unintended acceleration that have spurred the recall of millions of Toyota vehicles.
“Before you dismiss the cosmic ray theory, consider that the issue has been known since the 1950s, and airplane and spacecraft manufacturers design in safeguards that triple-check all data as a defense from such interference from space,” writes Autoblog. “Later, in the 1970s, researchers found that small amounts of this radiation does indeed make it down to the surface and can cause problems with small electronics like cell phones and computers.”
The possibility was brought to light by a “concerned scientist” who sent an email to the National Highway Traffic Administration (NHTSA). The message, which is published in full on Jalopnik, reads: “For reasons I am unable to disclose, I am anonymously submitting several publically available scientific papers that discuss the possibility of cosmic rays disrupting electronics at sea level, essentially flipping a bit from one to zero, or vice versa. This phenomenon is a ‘soft’ error that is not detectable except through redundant electronic and communication systems. The scientific community refers to such occurrences as ‘Single Event Upsets,’ or SEUs.” The scientist goes on to state, “The reason SEUs are now relevant to the automotive industry is because electronics have gotten smaller and the required voltage levels have dropped significantly, therefore making electronics more susceptible to cosmic radiation…”

Comment: Well, so now the effects of Earth losing it's protection against galactic cosmic rays is becoming obvious to some. It sounds like something out of Star Trek, but it's all too real: a few months ago NASA's IBEX (Interstellar Boundary Explorer) spacecraft discovered a giant ribbon of atomic particles floating at the edge of our solar system.
Nothing like the space ribbon has ever been seen before, and when NASA scientists first saw the data, they were stunned. As they double-checked the data and determined that the readings were in not in error, and as they realized the immense size of what they were beholding, they may well have had the same creeping sense of horror and awe as when it gradually dawned on the cast of Star Wars that they were seeing the Death Star.
NASA found itself in the nervous position of having to publicly admit that there was something huge, radioactive and invisible out there, right by our own solar system, and we have no clue what it's doing there. Not only that, but both our previous Voyager deep-space probes failed to detect it. "This is a shocking new result," said IBEX principal investigator Dave McComas. In 1964, astrophysicists in Fred Hoyle's sci-fi novel, 'The Black Cloud', become aware of an immense black cloud of gas that enters the solar system. The cloud, moving to interpose itself between the sun and the earth, could wipe out most of the life on earth by blocking solar radiation and ending photosynthesis. Astronomers and other scientists gather in England, where they discover that the cloud is a super-organism, many times more intelligent than our human species.

Comment: Hmmm.... Life imitating art.... dense dark cloud of plasma that has now been called Nememsis.... I read the astronomer Fred Hoyle's book The Black Cloud [1957] after finding out that there was a real Local Interstellar Cloud, also known as the "Local Fluff" that had already entered our solar system. According to NASA, the European Space Agency and other less official sources, this is a dense plasma with crystalline properties and it's approach has been watched for about 25 years. I have written about this scenario but I was very cross about NASA's last announcement appeared 2 days before Christmas, you can judge for yourself whether that you think that is strange. This article discusses life imitating art and cites the research that tells us that plasma has all the properties that we think is essential for life. Metaphysical sources have talked about the arrival of diamond ray or diamond flame energy, and quite frankly it's just one of many messages that required some serious work to verify. Take a bunch of fast-moving electrons, place them in orbit and then hit them with the shock waves from a solar storm. What do you get? Killer electrons. That’s the shocking recipe revealed by ESA’s Cluster mission.
Killer electrons are highly energetic particles trapped in Earth's outer radiation belt, which extends from 12 000 km to 64 000 km above the planet’s surface. During solar storms their number grows at least ten times and they can be dislodged, posing a threat to satellites. As the name suggests, killer electrons are energetic enough to penetrate satellite shielding and cause microscopic lightning strikes. If these electrical discharges take place in vital components, the satellite can be damaged or even rendered inoperable.
Comment: Since, I wrote my book, "killer electrons" no longer just knock out satellites, they are finding their way into our atmosphere and it only takes 15 minutes once electrons bound in Earth's radiation belt are hit by a blast from the Sun or a galactic source. This will be the explanation for the extremely rough rides that have seriously hurt airline passengers when they have hit unexpected turbulence in recent years and one investigation has already admitted as much, see archives. In the past, these blasts have been referred to as a solar particle event (SPE), which can arrive suddenly and exert an influence for several days. A dark object may be lurking near our solar system, occasionally kicking comets in our direction.
Nicknamed "Nemesis" or "The Death Star," this undetected object could be a red or brown dwarf star, or an even darker presence several times the mass of Jupiter. Why do scientists think something could be hidden beyond the edge of our solar system? Originally, Nemesis was suggested as a way to explain a cycle of mass extinctions on Earth.
Comment: Well, this is going to send the Planet X, Niburu people into a frenzy. I am sorry you will have to do you own research (dyor), because it is an idea that I have never felt was true [ie a death star because old reports tell us that astronomers had no idea what was approaching and this is a major clue that Nememesis is just a convenient name for whatever], but maybe astronomers feel the need to explain what is happening and as they expect even more comets, meteorites and fireballs which we all know have been increasing dramatically. However the FACTS are that something has already entered our solar system, a dense crystalline plasma cloud with higher than expected magnetism that NASA has stated has dense pockets that they are worried may pop the heliosheath that protects our solar system from Galactic Cosmic Rays. This is all quite interesting as our shielding against galactic cosmic rays and radiation is already at times severely reduced. Heavy metals paint snow yellow B92, 12th March 2010 
SOFIA -- The yellow snow that was falling in Bulgaria and south Romania several days ago contained heavy metals. In Sofia, authorities previously thought the color came from African sand. Bulgarian media are quoting Romanian meteorologists who rejected claims of their Bulgarian colleagues that the snow turned yellow due to the Saharan sand. Their research discovered that the reddish powder found in the snow contained copper, iron, zinc, chrome, lead, nickel, arsenic and cadmium – metals usually found in the ground. Ion Paun of Romania's Center of Meteorology said that their charts showed that the yellow snow "had nothing to do with Africa". Doctors, meanwhile, explained that heavy metals, in higher concentrations, can have adverse effect on people’s health, and can affect their livers, the Bulgarian media reported.

High winds in Mongolia mixed the clouds from a front with dust and sand, crossed northern China, and then dumped the unique-colored snow in Russia. "This type of precipitation is not harmful to the residents of the area and no additional analyses will be done," Pechkina said. Scientists confirmed a multi-coloured snowfall – ranging from light purple to brown – had landed in Russia's Stavropol Region.
Experts are still baffled, saying they need a day to analyse the snow, while environmentalists claim high pollution levels in Stavropol caused the event.
A similar incident took place some years ago in Russia's Far East, though climatologists say this was caused by a dust-storm mixing with snow in the clouds. Video [0:39]

What caused this strange apparition?

Purple haze all in my brainComment: Yes, it's getting stranger and stranger... If air, (nitrogen, oxygen, water vapor) is converted to a plasma, it becomes pinkish purple, if nitrogen and oygen are converted to a plasma it becomes purple so we have to assume that in Hungary, dry air became ionised and how that came about can only be speculated about, but there are places where this happens naturally see Roan Mountain Purple Fog. Interestingly, at www.science-frontiers.com/ run by William R. Corliss famed for his research into unusual phenomena, he has no entry for purple fog and that is weird because he has been collating rare atmospheric and meteorological phenomena recorded over the last 750 years. I have got some of his books and his catalogs are online, so there is purple light that occurs just a few minutes before sunsets and sunrises due to light being scattered by dust, anomalous purple lights in the skies, purple ball lightning and purple rainbows but no purple fog! A massive solar storm could leave millions of people around the world without electricity, running water, or phone service, government officials say.
That was their conclusion after participating in a tabletop exercise that looked at what might happen today if the Earth were struck by a solar storm as intense as the huge storms that occurred in 1921 and 1859.
Solar storms happen when an eruption or explosion on the surface of the sun sends radiation or electrically charged particles toward Earth. Minor storms are common and can light up the Earth's Northern skies and interfere with radio signals.
Comment: Yes, Space Weather is now a serious potential threat and we have the fulfillment of indigenous prophecy with a New Age dominated by space and the aether. Since I have written about this ad infinitum, I thought would give a quick summary of the "think positive" "group think" that I think has a strong grip on society has a whole. I have now realised that if people don't understand something and they don't like the sound of what they hear, it can now be easily dismissed as "being negative". Worrying about Space Weather is just a waste of energy and can be ignored. The "group think" mentality ignores the fact that there have been messages (mostly from indigenous groups and the metaphysical community) for over 50 years that our world is changing and that we will have to adapt. "Group think" assumes that our wonderful leaders have our best interests at heart, despite the fact it would mean dismantling their current power structures that keeps society struggling and making essential changes to enable us to survive in a New World dominated by space and universal forces. What this means in plain English is the reliance on electricty and a power grid is primitive and we should be now tapping the aether for clean reliable power, but people are killed first rather than consider this even though Space Weather is now a serious threat. There is another major assumption that the geomagnetic environment will stay reliable enough for oil companies to drill, as drilling for oil requires a reliable compass. What is interesting about Space Weather is that it can be seen as a great leveller. If we had a megablast from the Sun or a Magnetar that knocks out power grids around the world, the poor of certain countries would not even notice and would survive, humanity as a whole would survive, but the so-called advanced societies would be crippled. It does not have to happen, but "group think" that we don't have to change is too pervasive. Now if you don't agree with my reasoning, look at the trouble are now having with our satellite communication infrastructure and the problems caused by Space Weather and Space Junk. Sixteen people aboard a U.S. passenger aircraft were injured Saturday morning after it ran into turbulence over Anchorage in the state of Alaska, while it was traveling from Washington D.C. to Narita, police and air transport authorities said.
Turbulence hit the Boeing 747-400 United Airlines flight 897 at 10:55 a.m., when the aircraft, carrying 264 people, was trying to descend to an altitude of 9,200 meters from 9,700 meters, according to the airport office of the Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism Ministry. [...] The 16 people were rushed to hospitals by helicopters and other transportation means, the Chiba prefectural police said. [...]
A 50-year-old university professor from Fukuoka who was aboard the flight told Kyodo News, "The aircraft was jolted vehemently over Alaska twice or so about seven hours before its arrival."
"Many passengers were tossed from their seats, bumping into the ceiling," he said.
Comment: We have a leaky and sometimes non existent magnetic field (see the latest press release from the European Space Agency, Multiple rifts in Earth's magnetic shield), combined with standard and extreme space weather, hence air travel is a lot more hazardous than it used to be (see Best of the Blog - Space Weather & Best of the Blog - Electronics & Electromagnetic Chaos ). A solar wind stream is buffeting Earth's magnetic field and stirring up auroras around the Arctic Circle. "Last night, the entire sky was filled with fast moving bands and curtains," reports Fredrik Broms of Kvalřya, Norway. He snapped this picture of "one very happy sky watcher":
"I am amazed at the amount of activity we've been getting this week," Broms adds. "Normally the auroras come and fade, but now it's like someone is constantly feeding a fire."
Indeed, for polar aurora watchers, Feb. 2010 has been the best month in quite some time. It's a sign that the sun is coming back to life after a long, deep solar minimum. Sunspots have returned crackling with solar flares, and coronal mass ejections (CMEs) are once again buffeting Earth's magnetic field. NOAA forecasters estimate a 25% to 30% chance of more geomagnetic activity tonight.
Comment: Maybe, it's to do with the fact that the Earth's magnetic field is now very weak and may even have collapsed for a while, so the solar wind is now directly hitting our atmosphere to generate superb auroras. Whenever I go and watch what's happening with the magnetosphere, there always seems to be some action, even if there is not some severe pressure and the magnetosphere is red/white hot, the magnetic field lines are often contorted into a mess. CAPE CANAVERAL, Florida (AFP) - – NASA launched a first-of-its-kind solar observatory into space Thursday in hopes of expanding scientists' understanding of the sun and its complicated workings. [...]
Space physicists have called SDO the cornerstone of future NASA missions to study the sun, which is considered the next frontier for US space research.
NASA said the probe will be especially helpful in revealing how changes in the sun alter the levels of radiation and energy within our solar system, and will provide new information concerning the sun and solar system that directly affect Earth, its inhabitants and technology.
Scientists said space weather caused by the sun can affect communications and satellite signals, electrical power lines and other objects and energy transmissions in our atmosphere and beyond.
Telescopes and other gear onboard the probe will scrutinize sunspots and solar flares using more pixels and colors than any other observatory in the history of solar physics.
NASA said the spacecraft will send about 1.5 terabytes of data back to Earth each day -- the equivalent of streaming 380 full-length movies.
US physicists said that if they can get a better understanding of the sun's magnetic field, they can predict how it affects the solar system and near-Earth space to create space weather.

Are TGFs Hazardous to Air Travelers? NASA News, 10th February 2010 
Instruments scanning outer space for cataclysmic explosions called gamma-ray bursts are detecting intense flashes of gamma-ray energy right here in the friendly skies of Earth. These terrestrial gamma-ray flashes, or TGFs, blast through thunderstorms close to the altitude where commercial airliners fly.
In fact, they could be too close for comfort.
In a recent study,* scientists estimated that airline passengers could be exposed to 400 chest X-rays worth of radiation by being near the origin of a single millisecond blast. Joe Dwyer of the Florida Institute of Technology took part in that research, which used observations from NASA's Reuven Ramaty High Energy Solar Spectroscopic Imager, or RHESSI, to estimate the danger TGFs pose.
see caption "We believe the risk of encountering a TGF in an airplane is very small," says Dwyer. "I wouldn't hesitate to take a flight. Pilots already avoid thunderstorms because of turbulence, hail, and lightning, and we may just have to add TGFs to the list of reasons to steer clear of those storms."
But, he stresses, "it's worth looking into."
Comment: Well, at least they have got round to mentioning that people could be effected by these massive bursts of energy and I have noted a few warnings in my blog already, but this is NASA News so that might mean the warning might be taken seriously in the media, but I doubt it. This reminds me of the phrase about Space Weather that I coined in my book and was used in a section header, I thought of another phrase that airlines could adopt – "Come Fry With Me!" I'm having quite a day of inspiration, what if I produce some 'Fairy Goddess Unicorn Space Weather cards', then maybe someone in a New Age marketing establishment might take some interest... Actually, I am still in shock that the European Space Agency confirmed in print that there are occasions where the inhabitants of planet Earth (daylight side) have NO MAGNETIC FIELD protection from Space Weather, but declined to mention how long and frequent this situation lasts. The Themis NASA mission told us one breach was 4 Earth's wide and 7 Earth's deep and as the satellite took about 11 hours to sail past, they can't say when it opened and when it closed. I am sure someone can tell us really, but I doubt they want that kind of info circulating, it might disturb the few that are interested in health and safety issues. Researchers said satnav devices were facing the threat from an expected increase in solar flares from the Sun that could cause unpredictable errors in navigation.

Prof Cathryn Mitchell, from the University of Bath, said while the sun’s affects on navigation were difficult to project, the errors could last hours or even days.
“It varies quite a lot across the Earth; looking at the UK it will be about 10-metre errors in the positioning,” Prof Mitchell told the BBC.
"Ten metres out is probably going to be OK for a satnav system in a car but if you're using the system for something safety-critical like ships coming into harbour for navigation or possibly in the future landing aircraft, you're looking for much greater accuracy and more importantly, much greater reliability."
Comment: It is obvious to those of us watching the escalation of Space Weather that this is not just related to solar flares. We have many more regular substorms caused by the solar wind and a magnetosphere full of holes. What's more, nobody is talking about the regular cosmic/galactic blasts, but we can watch the magnetosphere getting hit on a regular basis. I missed this 20th January 2010 press release from the European Space Agency but it's no surprise as we are now experiencing extreme space weather. Multiple rifts in Earth's magnetic shield. We read: "This study reports the observation of fissures on the Sun-facing side of the Earth's magnetic shield – the dayside magnetopause. Fortunately, these fissures don't expose Earth's surface to the solar wind; our atmosphere protects us, even when our magnetic field doesn't. However, clear effects have been detected high in the upper atmosphere and in the region of space around Earth where satellites orbit."This press release tells us straight that we don't always have the protection of Earth's magnetic field and this is something I find hard to believe but it's in print. Please note ESA lessons on line: The effects of magnetic fields The charged particles in cosmic rays are deflected by the [Earth's] magnetic field and many are prevented from hitting the atmosphere directly. Some are trapped into two concentric doughnut-like bands around the Earth called the Van Allen Belts, discovered in 1958 by the American satellite: Explorer 1. ... As we have seen, on Earth we have the protection of a strong magnetic field. However, elsewhere in the solar system it is not quite as safe.As I keep writing, the atmosphere as a total shield is rubbish and scientists around the world were expressing concern because there were EXTENSIVE AIR SHOWERS OF COSMIC RAYS at ground level in 2000 and NASA have already told us that cosmic rays are at a space age high and to expect worse to come. What's more, the regular contortions of the Earth's magnetic fields lines are sometimes just so unbelievable, I wonder what is really going on. A SWARM of "smart dust" spacecraft, positioned at a sweet spot between the Earth and the sun, could alert us to the approach of dangerous space storms well before a conventional craft can. The first prototypes are due for launch into low-Earth orbit this year, perhaps as early as May.

The chips are essentially small solar panels with a radio antenna, and could act as a solar wind sensor (Acta Astronautica DOI: 10.1016/j.actaastro.2009.12.008).
The team envisage sending a whole swarm of these "smart dust" chips to the Lagrange point, where they would monitor the strength of the solar wind. They would also warn of any oncoming gusts of charged particles that could disrupt communicationsMovie Camera and electronic systems on Earth.
After the tiny craft has been dropped off at the Lagrange point, the effect of solar radiation moves it closer to the sun. Peck estimates that this could give an extra 13 minutes' notice of a storm compared with larger solar monitoring craft such as NASA's Advanced Composition Explorer.

Comment: The Lagrange point is a place in space where gravitational forces are cancelled out and satellites can literally hover in space. Giant Ribbon at the Edge of the Solar System: Mystery Solved? NASA News, 15th January 2010
Last year, when NASA's IBEX (Interstellar Boundary Explorer) spacecraft discovered a giant ribbon at the edge of the solar system, researchers were mystified. They called it a "shocking result" and puzzled over its origin. Now the mystery may have been solved.
"We believe the ribbon is a reflection," says Jacob Heerikhuisen, a NASA Heliophysics Guest Investigator from the University of Alabama in Huntsville. "It is where solar wind particles heading out into interstellar space are reflected back into the solar system by a galactic magnetic field."
Comment: At the WUWT forum, we have another interpretation from someone who sees the 'Giant Ribbon' in terms of plasma physics and so we can dispense with this new theory by Jacob Heerikhuisen et al., which I think should not be taken seriously anyway because it's retrospective. Any decent theory is supposed to be predictive and observations are supposed to ensure that scientists have got their basic ideas right. Well, NASA et al. proved they did not have the fundamentals correct because the 'Giant Ribbon' was a complete surprise. The spectacular aerial display appearing in the skies of northern Norway a few days ago -- still receiving incredulous reactions from around the world -- has generated a tidal wave of speculation:
"Was it a failed Russian missile?"
"A UFO?"
"Or ... another clandestine test of HAARP (the High Altitude Auroral Research Project which, it turns out, has several not-so-well-known facilities scattered across northern Scandinavia -- a Project steeped in its own multi-layered technology, mysteries and speculations ...)?"
The curiously delayed Russian admission that it had, indeed, conducted another routine missile test on Wednesday morning (when the mysterious "light spiral from Heaven," as papers in Norway are now referring to it, appeared), did nothing to quell this "speculation explosion"; in fact, it only added fuel ....
As we reported in Part I, when initially queried by Norwegian media, the Russian Navy, and the Russian Embassy in Norway, denied all knowledge of the phenomenon -- as well as any rumored "missile tests" they may have been conducting in the same time frame and area.
Only a day later did an AP story finally appear -- quoting the Russian Defense Ministry's eventual, official statement that, indeed "a Bulava missile was launched Wednesday by a nuclear submarine submerged in the White Sea ... and its third stage suffered an unspecified failure ...." (below). The story underscored, however, that this "limited offical Ministry acknowledgement" did NOT directly link that missile failure with the growing "Norwegian Spiral" story.
Comment: Apparently, the Norwegians are now calling this the "light spiral from Heaven", that's nice. Here we have a good summary of technical details and again more confirmation of why the Russians would refuse to take responsibility for something that had nothing to do with them. Hoagland seems to have proven that the light spiral was moving in the sky but that does not mean it was an out of control missile. I noted that he used information from certain message boards that I visit and I note there was some cherry picking of relevant information. He might have picked up on the plasma explanation because it's highly relevant as we now have confirmation that dense plasma is entering our solar system. Apparently, someone wrote to plasma world expert, Anthony Peratt and placed the response on a GLP message thread: His response to question about whether this was a plasma phenomenon is unequivocal. First reply: This event was natural and occurs when two Birkeland currents interact, usually around 300 -500 km above Earth. Birkeland currents most often occur in pairs because of the 1/r attractive force between them. This is not an EISCAT heating phenomena. linkEISCAT is the European version of HAARP. Second question: "And one last thing, given the rise in cosmic ray flux recently and the drop in strength of the Interplanetary Magnetic Field, can we expect more of these types of events in the future?" This was the second reply: Today we have only very weak auroras in the upper ionosphere. In the past, as NASA's THEMIS satellites have discovered, they were a million-million times more energetic and located say, 1 million km from Earth. Comment: Real-time Magnetosphere Simulation movies are produced by Japanese scientists, using real-time solar wind and interplanetary magnetic field data observed routinely by the ACE satellite. Since the planet is being blasted regularly now in accordance to predictions that the deliver of evolutionary energies will dramatically step up 100,000 times year on year between 2007 and 2012, these blasts have become more and more frequent and of course, a few folk have noticed! The scale of this onslaught is nearly impossible to exaggerate. The flood of gamma and X-rays that washed over the Earth was detected by several satellites designed to observe the high-energy skies. RHESSI, which observes the Sun, saw this blast. INTEGRAL, used to look for gamma rays from monster black holes, saw this blast. The newly-launched Swift satellite, built to detect gamma-ray bursts from across the Universe, not only saw this blast, but its detectors were completely saturated by the assault of energy… even though Swift wasn’t pointed anywhere near the direction of the burst! In other words, this flood of photons saturated Swift even though they had to pass through the walls of the satellite itself first!
It gets worse. This enormous wave of fierce energy was so powerful it actually partially ionized the Earth’s upper atmosphere, and it made the Earth’s magnetic field ring like a bell. Several satellites were actually blinded by the event.
So what was this thing? What could do this kind of damage?

Comment: The whole solar system was ringing like a bell, not just Earth's magnetic field! Despite the widespread beliefs, it is quite apparent that when we are told that we are entering a new Age dominated by space or the ether, very few took this literally, but as we are now experiencing Extreme Space Weather, it seems that this Magnetar is just one of many blasts now taking place. Well, I don't know if Phil Plait is exagerating here, but this is the biggest estimate of this energetic blast that I have seen anywhere. By the way, he also does not want you to know about astronomers who were convinced that we were hit by a gravity wave that arrived at the speed of light and caused the December 2004 Tsunami, just 44.6 hours before the gamma ray energy arrived. The solar system is passing through an interstellar cloud that physics says should not exist. In the Dec. 24th issue of Nature, a team of scientists reveal how NASA's Voyager spacecraft have solved the mystery.
The discovery has implications for the future when the solar system will eventually bump into other, similar clouds in our arm of the Milky Way galaxy.
"Using data from Voyager, we have discovered a strong magnetic field just outside the solar system," explains lead author Merav Opher, a NASA Heliophysics Guest Investigator from George Mason University. "This magnetic field holds the interstellar cloud together and solves the long-standing puzzle of how it can exist at all."

Eventually, the solar system will run into some of them, and their strong magnetic fields could compress the heliosphere even more than it is compressed now. Additional compression could allow more cosmic rays to reach the inner solar system, possibly affecting terrestrial climate and the ability of astronauts to travel safely through space. On the other hand, astronauts wouldn't have to travel so far because interstellar space would be closer than ever. These events would play out on time scales of tens to hundreds of thousands of years, which is how long it takes for the solar system to move from one cloud to the next. "There could be interesting times ahead!" says Opher. Comment:This is another major Space Weather related announcement about the potential threat of massive changes to the current status of our solar system and NASA decides to give it minimum publicity by releasing it 2 days before Christmas when the maximum number of people are distracted. By the way, it's one of these bits of 'fluff' that astrophysicists have already stated on record they are concermed may vapourise the heliosphere. Remember, this 'fluff' is coming our way, it has not hit us yet.... Note: What NASA are saying, is that if this cloud does not get us, then there are others coming our way that might. A network of cameras deployed around the Arctic in support of NASA's THEMIS mission has made a startling discovery about the Northern Lights. Sometimes, vast curtains of aurora borealis collide, producing spectacular outbursts of light. Movies of the phenomenon were unveiled at the Fall meeting of the American Geophysical Union today in San Francisco.
"Our jaws dropped when we saw the movies for the first time," says space scientist Larry Lyons of UCLA, a leading member of the team that made the discovery. "These outbursts are telling us something very fundamental about the nature of auroras."

Comment: Now, we have "plasma bullets". NASA scientists are quite inventive and so the same feature can be called different names (ie plasma tadpoles), until they reach a consensus. When the sun is relatively inactive — as it has been in recent years — the outermost layer of Earth's atmosphere cools dramatically, new observations find.
The results could help scientists better understand the swelling and shrinking of our planet's atmosphere, a phenomenon that affects the orbits of satellites and space junk.

This same cooling effect is expected to happen (somewhat counterintuitively) as carbon dioxide concentrations increase from emissions at Earth's surface . So understanding the natural variability of this layer is important to detecting any changes from carbon dioxide increases.
The cooling effect also has an effect on the orbits of satellites, because it changes the density of the atmosphere layer. For example, if the layer heats up, it expands like a marshmallow in a microwave, as several scientists described it, and lower, denser parts of the atmosphere rise to higher altitudes. Essentially, as the upper atmosphere expands, the lower atmosphere also expands to fill the space. When the thermosphere cools, the opposite happens and the layers deflate and sink to lower altitudes.
The changing density means that satellites end up with either more or less drag on them, which can change the shape of their orbits. In the case of something like the Hubble Space Telescope, this can have implications on the orbiter's lifetime, Solomon told LiveScience. Less drag during a cooler period means the satellite might live longer, he said.
The cooling also could have implications for the buildup of so-called "space junk" – old satellites and pieces of satellites that have begun to litter the upper atmosphere and can pose a threat to other orbiting spacecraft, such as the International Space Station. Less drag means this junk gets speedier and could pose more of a threat.

New information about lightning-emitted X-rays, gamma rays and high-energy electrons during thunderstorms is prompting scientists to raise concerns about the potential for airline passengers and crews to be exposed to harmful levels of radiation.
Scientists at the Florida Institute of Technology, University of California, Santa Cruz and the University of Florida have estimated that airplane passengers could be exposed to a radiation dose equal to that from 400 chest X-rays if their airplane happens to be near the start of a lightning discharge or related phenomena known as a terrestrial gamma ray flash.
The big unknown: how often -- if ever -- commercial airliners are exposed to these thunderstorm events, because the bursts of radiation occur only over extremely brief periods and extend just a few hundred feet in the clouds.

The observations included those made from orbiting satellites of "terrestrial gamma-ray flashes," or TGFs, mysterious phenomena that appear to originate within thunderstorms at the same altitudes used by jet airliners. They also included measurements of X-rays and gamma rays from natural lightning on the ground, as well as artificial lightning triggered with wire-trailing rockets fired into storm clouds. Researchers believe the phenomena are linked, because both produce high levels of gamma rays and X-rays and occur along with the actual lightning flash.
The scientists concluded the radiation in a football field-sized space around these lightning events could reach "biologically significant levels," up to 10 rem, according to their paper.
Comment: According to reports, these bursts of energy are so massive, that theorists calculate this is what you would expect to be coming out of a blackhole, NOT the upper atmosphere of Earth! However, this recent phenomenon is part of the significant electromagnetic changes taking place on this planet, and besides the impact on human biology, there is an impact on electronics. Thanks to a series of flares that began September 15, the galaxy is now the brightest source in the gamma-ray sky -- more than ten times brighter than it was in the summer.
Astronomers identify the object as 3C 454.3, an active galaxy located 7.2 billion light-years away in the constellation Pegasus. But even among active galaxies, it's exceptional.
"We're looking right down the barrel of a particle jet powered by the galaxy's supermassive black hole," said Gino Tosti at the National Institute of Nuclear Physics in Perugia, Italy. "Some change within that jet -- we don't know what -- is likely responsible for these flares."
Blazars, like many active galaxies, emit oppositely directed jets of particles traveling near the speed of light when matter falls toward their central supermassive black holes. What makes a blazar so bright in gamma rays is its orientation: One of the jets happens to be aimed straight at us.

France's accident investigation agency has opened an inquiry into an Air France flight from Rio de Janeiro to Paris which ran into difficulties last month just miles from where another of its planes vanished in June with 228 people on board.
In an attempt to "shed light" on the crash of Flight AF447, which went missing while flying over the Atlantic, the Bureau d'Enquętes et d'Analyses (BEA) said it was looking into what triggered Flight AF445 to issue a mayday signal flying the same route on 29 November. "We cannot ignore such a coincidence," said a spokesman.
The A330 airbus – the same model as the aeroplane which went down on 1 June – was four hours into its flight to the French capital when it hit heavy turbulence, an Air France statement said. "[The aircraft] performed a standard descent in order to avoid a zone of severe turbulence and get back to a less turbulent level of flight."
The airline insists the emergency signal was not sent because the pilots believed they were in danger.
Comment: OK, since we now have confirmation that Space Weather COULD have caused Electromagnetic Interfence (EMI) in the electronics of a Qantas flight back in October 2008, and we have seen 2 incidents in the approx. same region, it is becoming more likely that this was caused by Space Weather and the known weakness of the Earth's magnetic field known as the South Atlantic anomaly (SAA), see diagrams here for more information. What's more, I would imagine that the SAA is now probably much bigger as NASA have informed us that the Earth's magnetic field is now unstable with massive breaches, that they are unwilling to give us much detail about. It came suddenly from the distant reaches of the Constellation Sagittarius, some 50,000 light years away. For a brief instant, a couple of tenths of a second, on December 27, 2004 an invisible burst of energy the equivalent of half a million years of sunlight shone on Earth. Many orbiting satellites electronics were zapped and the Earth's upper atmosphere was amazingly ionized from a massive hit of gamma ray energy.
The source of the invisible attack was a rare magnetar SGR 1806-20 on the other side of the Milky Way. These soft gamma ray repeaters, SGRs, occur when twisted magnetic fields attempt to re-align themselves and crack the magetar's crust releasing the awesome burst or pulse of energy with a death-zone of a few light years. Magnetars have magnetic fields 1000 times those of ordinary pulsars -so powerful as to be lethal at a distance of 1000 kilometers. Comment: I'm I am starting to wonder now.... We have the spectacular light phenomenon event in Norway and there is now a preponderance of articles related to extreme cosmic objects and events. Hmmmm.... This morning in Norway, people saw a strange and still-unexplained phenomenon. Eye-witness Nick Banbury of Harstad reports: "We are used to seeing lots of auroras here in Arctic Norway, but on my way to work this morning I saw something completely unexpected. Between 7:50 and 8:00 a.m. local time, there was a strange light in the sky," shown here in a photo taken by Jan Petter:
"It consisted initially of a green beam of light similar in colour to the aurora with a mysterious rotating spiral at one end," continues Banbury. "This spiral then got bigger and bigger until it turned into a huge halo in the sky with the green beam extending down to the earth. According to the press, this could be seen all over northern norway and must therefore have been very high up in the atmosphere to be seen hundreds of km apart."
"[A popular] suggestion at the moment is that it was a rocket shot up by a Russian submarine in the white sea, but the Russians deny this apparently. A big mystery indeed!"
Comment: Wow!! Check out the images over in the Norwegian press! here #1, here # 2 & here #3 Well, I have to wonder, how many people are going to start asking some serious questions!!!!!!!!! Update #1 This has hit the mainstream media, the comment about lasers does not explain how this could be seen all over Northern Norway which would cover thousands of square miles, see Mystery as spiral blue light display hovers above Norway. Update #2 This is a real mystery, see something similar over China April 2009. For those who still think this is a Russian missile, I doubt very much whether in this case, diplomatic relations between Russia and China are good enough for missile 'tests'! What's more, even though this commentary is in Chinese, listen to how many times they say UFO! link. Update #3 At the moment the Russians, are still not fully admitting that this was a rocket that had failed. What is odd is that this looked like a blue orb that jumped about in the sky FIRST before it started to swirl before emitting the turquoise light for 12 - 10 minutes (Daily Mail), nothing like an out of control missile and enough time to make sure a few people got some good photos.... At the moment, since there are reports that this also happened on 1st November 2009, see Earlier version of "Norwegian Spiral" took place in November. . Obviously, this is very suspicious as a similar event happened in China (see update #2) and we are expected to believe they all have the same cause.... However, it is inevitable, that some believe this was an attempt at contact, see Norway wormhole is First Contact, claim UFO watchers . interestingly, we find, "It looked like a rocket that spun around and around - and then went diagonally across the heavens," Totto Eriksen, from Tromso in northern Norway, told The Sun. Hmmm... Update #4 This may be significant, Fire in the sky; strange lights over Norwegian military base & Interview with Norwegian photographer and Russian military official: Is this strange light a UFO? Why would the Russians launch a missile that could 'fail' over a Norwegian military base? If you are familiar with UFO reports, military installations are a popular haunt and I believe it has got NOTHING to do with aliens checking out our weapons. From the evidence available, it seems that orbs/UAPs do not like our radiation and the leakage of radiation into our atmosphere makes the orbs/UAPs much easier to see. I think the answer looks more and more like this is an orb that came in and out of a "wormhole" and took the opportunity to draw the world's attention, similar to many other recent events, but we really need some help here with the WHY? Personally, I think it is because the orbs realise that most humans are clueless and unaware of the fact that we share this planet with another lifeform. Due to the changing aetheric environment, (our planet is being flooded with cosmic radiation), our neighbours are becoming much easier to see. Therefore, I think they are literally just introducing themselves. Update #5 Just in case this is not obvious, failed rockets are destroyed by remote control before they have any opportunity to cause any damage. The thought that the Russians would have allowed a failed rocket to be projected 700 miles over NATO neighbours Finland, Sweden and the Norway to make a picturesque swirl on limited fuel is absurd. Another 'UFO' from Russia Cosmic Log, MSNBC, 11th December 2009 Just a day after a Russian rocket launch set off a spate of UFO sightings in Norway, yet another missile test created a similar sky show over the heart of Russia. Like Wednesday's launch of the submarine-based Bulava missile from the White Sea, Thursday's launch of the land-based Topol ballistic missile from the Kapustin Yar missile range on the lower Volga River sparked plenty of sightings. Reports came in from Chelyabinsk, Yekaterinburg, Ufa and other cities, said NBC News space analyst James Oberg. The rocket plume created a spiral pattern in the sky, though the pattern wasn't as striking as the one seen over Norway earlier in the week. "The difference in sunlight conditions from pre-dawn northern Norway may account for much of the visual differences," Oberg said. [...] "The first rocket UFO was so much fun, the Russians fired off another one as an encore!" Oberg wrote. "Actually, the timing of the two tests is almost certainly accidental." Comment: Huh!!! A Russian missile test fails spectacularly, so the Russians do the exact same test again the next day because it was "so much fun"?!! The mystery deepens!! There are several videos over Russia provided with this report, but the following is the best that shows an orb right next to the spiral formation, YouTube video, captured from Yekaterinburg. Report a Bad Astronomy The situation can be summarised as follows: According to the Norwegians, the information that they have on the light phenomenon is "restricted". The Russians are admitting a test, but that the spectacular light show over a Norwegian military base is nothing to do with them, all reports that state the light phenomena was caused by the Russians never provide an official source. So what does the Russian military have to say? Not much. "On this matter we do not confirm, we do not deny, we do not comment," a Russian Defense Ministry spokesman told Infox.ru. sourceYou can see the actual footage of a missile test provided by Russians and compare, I would say it is NOTHING LIKE what was seen in the skies above the Norwegian military base. I also found a video clip of a major event over Tomsk, Russia from 2006, where we have something arriving that leaves a geometrical trail, just like an example in my UAP video Index, (UAP Caught On Outdoor Surveillance Camera in Russia May 2009), but in this video, we see a hole open and an orb pop out that then proceeds to spiral! Well, quite frankly, the orbs really know how to put on a show.... LOL!! Update #2 YouTube video Strange Vortex or Time portal worm hole has been seen in Mexico's skys!!! [7:31], gives us a discussion by Mexican ufologists, of dimensional portals seen in Mexico and the United Kingdom. The most interesting part is the presentation by Mexican media personality, Jaime Maussan who talks about crop circles in the UK and the fleets of orbs in the sky over Mexico as being "signs". He states that because of this activity, there is a relationship between UK and Mexico and he quotes the Bible, as a lot of people are doing at the moment, as people start to realise the enormity of what is taking place.... BTW, the end of this clip shows what looks like an eyeball in the sky, totally amazing! So as ufologists start to agree that this is a NEW phenomena, nothing to do with little green men, we need some plasma physicists and space-time theorists to step up to the plate and give us some options (in plain english), for what is happening here. Meanwhile, world controllers must be in complete shock, there is NOTHING they can do.... This is the Apocalpyse!! Update #3 At the moment, the light phenomena event over Northern Norway cannot be dismissed as a rocket failure, but if you want to believe this explanation, based on a dubious set of assertions and some deliberate attempts to mislead with the fact that the Russian authorities admit to a rocket failure So now we have great examples of this "string" delivery mechanism that has been long theorised about by scientists, but see what you think with this 'controversial' YouTube video [1:05] Vandenburg Missile Test ... or UFO Wormhole? I have watched this video quite a few times now and all I can say is: What a way to make to make an entrance! Update #4 There are claims that there was a spiral over South Africa on 18th October, and the following report was given by astronomers who stated: "A Centaur rocket, followed by US military weather satellite (DMSP F-18) dumped a load of excess fuel into space, resulting in spectacular views over Southern Africa." Interestingly, this reported also stated: "It was a most spectacular event - took me completely by surprise as the fuel dump was scheduled to take place later over Europe when they boosted the Centaur rocket to heliocentric orbit. What we saw here in SA beats anything I've seen so far from Europe - the rocket appeared to be "puffing" and I guess this was propellant venting and then expanding in concentric rings around the rocket." Update #5 - 18th December 2009 Ok, I have given this a few more days thought and I DON'T think the South African event was a spiral like the examples we have seen in Norway and elsewhere. Instead it looks more like an object surrounded by plasma "double layers", implying whatever it was required some shielding. It came suddenly from the distant reaches of the Constellation Sagittarius, some 50,000 light years away. For a brief instant, a couple of tenths of a second, on December 27, 2004 an invisible burst of energy the equivalent of half a million years of sunlight shone on Earth. Many orbiting satellites electronics were zapped and the Earth's upper atmosphere was amazingly ionized from a massive hit of gamma ray energy.
The source of the invisible attack was a rare magnetar SGR 1806-20 on the other side of the Milky Way. These soft gamma ray repeaters, SGRs, occur when twisted magnetic fields attempt to re-align themselves and crack the magetar's crust releasing the awesome burst or pulse of energy with a death-zone of a few light years. Magnetars have magnetic fields 1000 times those of ordinary pulsars -so powerful as to be lethal at a distance of 1000 kilometers. Comment: I'm I am starting to wonder now.... We have the spectacular light phenomenon event in Norway and there is now a preponderance of articles related to extreme cosmic objects and events. Hmmmm.... This is a November 2005, Sky and Telescope article talking about this Magnetar blast Powerful Magnetar Blast from Another Galaxy , but at the time, scientists thought it was a Gamma Ray Burst (GRB) and many tried to dismiss the obvious link between the Asian Tsunami which occurred approx. 44 hours earlier. He discusses the occurence of a Superluminal Gravity wave, but we now know for a fact that some some form of energy described as "radiation" from Magnetars arrives first and then the Gamma rays arrive afterwards.... Whatever, at the time scientists did not know what had hit us and there was long silence from the astronomical community that went on for months and months. For a very long time most believe that we had been hit by a GRB, but now we know it was Magnetar SGR 1806-20 that was first discovered in 1979, believe me, that's far worse. Well, this article does not mention the recent Magnetar events in 2008 and 2009 and due to the extreme nature of these objects, it it no wonder that the Obama Administration tried to get some sense out of the metaphysical community about "Planetary challenges" and the implications for evolutionary change. Archive copy: COSMIC rays are being considered by air safety investigators as a cause of two rapid descents made by a Qantas Airbus on its way from Singapore to Perth in October last year.
Air safety investigators brought down their latest report into the flight QF72 incident, in which more than 100 people were injured, finding there was equipment failure in one of three avionics boxes.
The investigators found that the box, called an air data inertial reference unit, streamed wildly inaccurate data to flight computers. Cosmic or solar radiation may have affected the unit.
''There is a constant stream of high-energy galactic and solar radiation interacting with the Earth's upper atmosphere,'' the report noted.
''This interaction creates a cascade of secondary particles. Some of the secondary particles, in particular neutrons, can affect aircraft avionics systems.''
The aircraft, with 303 passengers, made an emergency landing at Learmonth in Western Australia.
Comment: Major admission that Space Weather could have interfered with jet electronics that caused one flight attendant and 11 passengers to be seriously injured, and eight other crew members and at least 99 other passengers to receive minor injuries. It has taken 13 months for accident investigators to come to this conclusion and to my knowledge, this is the first major admission that Space Weather can trigger electromagnetic interference (EMI) in jet electronics. When you consider the implications, especially after what we are now being told by NASA about the leakiness of Earths defences against cosmic galactic radiation and the expected increase, the media coverage of this story is meagre. Interestingly, this happened at the same time as Earth was being energetically hammered. It seems that the 7th October 2008 Qantas incident, can be attributed to the Soft Gamma Ray Repeater, Magnetar SGR 0501+4516, which sprang into life on the 22nd August and over 4 months emitted a series of mega outbursts. Magnetars have been jokingly described as "solar flares on steroids" but this hides the fact that some estimate that in .2 of second, magnetars give off as much energy as the Sun gives in 250,000 years. So, there was a major outburst on the 3rd October 2008 from another Magnetar called SGR J1550-5418 and it seems that as well as gamma-rays, x-rays, light and ultraviolet light, magnetars also magnetise dust and particles, so we were getting slammed with those too. Major and extreme space weather events can trigger substorms, so it seems that on the 7th October the Earths magnetic field could have convulsed enough to create a breach and allow in an excess of particles that caused havoc in the electronics for the Qantas flight. With this admission, we can expect further events in the future and we must now await the reports from accident investigators about the series of other major airplane incidents in the last year. Sigh.... I would just like to point out to certain people who regularly visit my website and who are in no doubt amazed by my research. It is a bad idea to follow people who do not have any academic qualifications worth talking about, but feel the need to then extend their "expertise" into galactic cosmology, a field where scientists are still making major discoveries, at the same time that they are unsure about the possibility of major challenges for our solar system and confusing the issue with wildly inaccurate estimates. False alarms wake orbiting astronauts UPI News, 20th November 2009 
HOUSTON, Nov. 20 (UPI) -- NASA Friday was investigating false fire and depressurization alarms aboard the shuttle Atlantis and the International Space Station, officials said.
The alarms woke sleeping astronauts Thursday night with sensors indicating a fire and a dangerous loss of pressure, NASA officials said Friday.
The alarms turned out to be false and the crew was never in any danger, said Mission Control in Houston, which is investigating the cause of the false alarms.
Comment: As the space scientists keep telling us, space is far from being a quiet place. It seems that a build up of charge tripped some electronics on the ISS. There has been some stormy geomagetic events with Spaceweather.com has reporting bright auroral activity over Norway and www.solarcycle24.com reported an unsettled geomagnetic field due to a recurrent coronal hole high-speed solar wind stream. Mutant hitchhikers may become a major hurdle in the quest to send humans deeper into the galaxy, scientists say. That's because no matter how fit astronauts feel at liftoff, they're likely to be carrying disease-causing microbes such as toxic E. coli and Staphylococcus strains. Charged particles zipping through space, known as cosmic rays, can mutate the otherwise manageable microbes, spurring the bugs to reproduce quicker and become more virulent, recent studies show. At the same time, exposure to cosmic rays and the stresses of long-term weightlessness can dampen the human immune system, encouraging diseases to take hold.
[...] On Earth humans are protected from the effects of cosmic rays, because most of the particles are deflected by the planet's magnetic field.
Comment: It just amazes me as we are quickly losing the shielding around our solar system and the Earth's magnetic field is now unstable and periodically cracks wide open that commentators keep talking about the problem of astronauts in the highly radioactive environment of space. As NASA have pointed out, our planet is being flooded with cosmic radiation and we risk being completely exposed. Hence, due to the rapidly changing conditions on Earth, I coined the phrase in my book, "We are all astronauts now!" Our planet is under a constant massive energetic bombardment from cosmic sources to "upgrade" our planet. On 21/22 January 2009, the planet was blasted by gamma-ray repeater SGR J1550-5418, the following YouTube clip was added by someone diligently watching what was happening to the magnetosphere, which is the Earth's first defence against space weather. At the same time, we experienced a Sudden Stratospheric Warming (SSW) event where the temperature in the stratosphere rose 40-50 degrees centigrade (depends on source), at the time people could not understand what had happened because the sun was quiet, but this was the fallout from a magnetar that NASA scientists describe as "a solar flare on steroids". In 1/10 of a second, this type of a neutron star, or magnetar can release as much energy as the Sun would in 100,000 years. I wrote my book in 2006, to explain that Earth was under heavy bombardment and since then, things have only got worse as predicted. Poor weather on Tuesday prevented NASA from launching a test version of the Ares I rocket it is developing to replace the space shuttle.
Ares I is designed to loft a crew capsule called Orion to low-Earth orbit. Initially it would travel to the International Space Station, but later it would act as the first leg of missions to the moon, taking a crew capsule to low-Earth orbit, where the capsule would dock with other spacecraft that would get the rest of the way there.

The main problem was the risk of static electricity buildup on the rocket, which can occur when it flies through high-level clouds – a phenomenon called triboelectrification.
Such buildup could prevent the rocket from transmitting data to the ground – or worse, prevent ground controllers from activating a self-destruct system on the rocket in case it veers dangerously off course. Officials are being extra cautious about triboelectrification with Ares I-X because it is an experimental vehicle that has never flown before.
Comment: The electrical nature of our world is being featured more in reports by NASA and the space community, as a reflection of increasing Space Weather and the continuation of the build up of electrical charge around our planet. "According to James Brenan of the department of geology at the University of Toronto (quoted in Science Daily), the platinum in your wedding ring is not of this Earth. That's because "the extreme temperature at which the Earth's core formed more than four billion years ago would have completely stripped any precious metals from the rocky crust and deposited them in the core." In other words, miners would have to dig to the center of the planet to mine any platinum, rhodium or certain other precious metals. So where did the platinum that lies just beneath the Earth's surface come from? You guessed it: it's extraterrestrial. The assumption is that the metals with which we're familiar actually rained down from the sky as "extraterrestrial debris," moving through the solar system in comets and meteorites. Researchers seem to like the idea of an "extraterrestrial rain" -- and not just because it's such a terrific image. Comment: In my book, Tuning the Diamonds, I wrote about the Golden Age and Space Weather delivering vast amounts of ormus elements. This is an extract: So far, I haven't had a single person who has read my book comment on this analysis. I wrote about universal energies arriving on Earth being highly catalytic, which is required to speed up evolutionary changes and lessen the risk of massive failure. We know that ormus elements are in our atmosphere because there is now massive nuclear level reactions going on in our atmosphere and the production of gamma rays, (this was also seen in David Hudson's research with ormus elements) are major source of concern to scientists, (it would be of concern to airline passengers too, but they don't know they are sometimes getting fried). Comment: "The future of our planet and others may depend, in part, on how the galactic magnetic fields change with time." I think this is some major news that can be added to the other extraordinary news about the changing conditions for life on this planet. There are different press releases about this discovery, but the one here from Boston University is quite clear. Since it is already understood that we are currently receiving energy from galactic sources and scientists now talk about the Galactic wind, it is interesting that we have been told clearly that there is drift of neutral atoms from a galactic source. This is a piece of significant information if you are familiar with metaphysical literature that suggests we receive periodic downloads of neutral energies. The discussion of the ribbon here has caused the Electric Universe theorist to say, well of course, we told you, but personally, I am puzzled by the discussion of neutral atoms that make up this feature. However, since nobody seems to have predicted it and we are told that the ribbon is being controlled by the galactic magnetic field, this is rather an esoteric object, and in metaphysical terms we can describe it as a mysterious 'serpent'. "Natural fluctuations in the sun's atmosphere could cause it to fire a giant plasma ball at Earth, shutting down the planet's electric grids and leading to widespread social collapse, according to a report from the U.S. National Academy of Sciences (NAS). Funded by NASA, the report draws attention to naturally occurring events known as coronal mass ejections (CME), in which a ball of plasma -- the charged, high-energy particles that comprise stars -- is fired from the sun. If such a ball strikes the Earth, it could produce rapid changes in the planet's magnetic field, leading to a surge of direct current in the long-range power lines that carry electricity through modern power grids."
Comment: This is old news and was first reported in early January 2009, see archives, but more awareness is required to educate people about why our modern technological world has become vulnerable. However, at this moment in time, the Sun is extremely quiet and nobody seems to known if and when activity will ramp up. The use of the term "plasma balls" instead of Corona Mass Ejections is unfortunate and maybe a better headline would be A Zap from the Sun could Electrically Short Earth - Technology is the Achilles Heel . This would not too be too disimilar to NASA's own press releases given in the past. At least then, people would start to get a clear impression that Earth is not some isolated bauble in space and that we are part of a much greater cosmic environment. Giant cosmic-ray laser to flash across Paris sky The rooftop of a Paris skyscraper will to be transformed into a giant cosmic-ray detector in an unusual week-long experiment that is due to start on Saturday. "Every time the machine, which will be placed on top of the 689-foot high Montparnasse Tower - Paris's tallest building - picks up a sub-atomic particle called a muon, a pulse of laser light will flash across the sky of the city's Latin Quarter from the Paris Observatory. Muons are debris from protons that are blasted out from the Sun or beyond our Solar System and constantly bombard the Earth. [...]
The so-called "cosmic opera", which will only be visible at night, seeks to inform the public about cosmic particles and pay tribute to an experiment into the phenomenon, conducted at the top of the Eiffel Tower in 1910 by a German physicist, Theodor Wulf."
Comment: Well, it's a publicity stunt, but maybe, the odd person will wonder why attention is being focused on cosmic rays, even though NASA have just announced that we are at record highs and it looks like earthlings will be experiencing levels not seen for many centuries. Personally, my current endeavour started when I started to query why metaphysical sources were encouraging people to protect their energy fields, now I know and all the signs are that Space Weather will have an increasingly major impact for all life on Earth. "WHETHER it's showering spacecraft with lethal radiation, filling the sky with ghostly light, or causing electrical surges that black-out entire cities, space weather is a force to be reckoned with. [...] Many of the serious events involve disturbances in the charged portion of the atmosphere, known as the ionosphere, which stretches from 80 to 1000 kilometres above sea level. The finger of blame has always been pointed at the sun, which bombards the Earth with a stream of charged particles in the form of the solar wind. During the last three years, though, the sun's cycle of activity has hit a trough, and as Murtagh observes, space weather is temporarily calm.
Yet if the sun really is the only cause, things haven't been quite as quiet as we might have expected. Despite the solar lull, activity in the ionosphere still hots up occasionally - with ghostly tides of charged particles that throw GPS systems out of whack and block radio communication. It seems that as much as one-fifth of this space weather cannot be blamed on the sun after all.If the cause of these charged-particle surges is not above the atmosphere, it must be somewhere below. But where?
Comment: Scientists are still desperately trying to understand all the different aspects that generate the phenomena of Space Weather that causes disturbances to GPS, satellite communications, national power grids, pipelines and other electronic systems, including the geomagnetic effects that disturb electromagnetic humans. Yet, it is now twenty years since scientists realised that there had been a considerable change and the Earth had acquired the Equatorial Electrojet, a new space weather feature that holds a depository of excess energy. In my book, I identified this as the promised Mayan 'Serpent Rope' that was indicated to arrive before 2012 and this ties in nicely with the Mayan predictions of a New Age dominated by space or the aether. Since the Maya are experts in understanding evolutionary energies, it seems that the space community have confirmed that Mayan prophecy has been fulfilled. Recent press releases from NASA reveal that Space Weather is set to dominate our lives as we lose our shielding to oncoming Space Weather in the form of solar, cosmic, galactic and intergalactic energies. Unfortunately, most people are not interested, not even the metaphysically minded as most have no understanding of their relationship with the cosmos. Well, we are awaiting the fulfillment Hopi prophecy and the coming of the Red Star that I think is the supergiant star Betelgeuse that is mysteriously shrinking. Scientists are watching intensely, as it shows signs that it might nova and then there will be a change of attitude, that is guaranteed. Comment: I was actually sent this link by Dr. Paul LaViolette who I have been in correspondence with and I wrote about his superwave theory in my book. I consider him to be a world class astrophysicist and alternative thinker. Unfortunately, this interview is a first class example of how the rumour factory works. Here, Project Camelot interviewers start off this interview with an effort to sensationalize Paul LaViolette's interview by his reponse to a question on 'Black Projects'. We are told that a mysterious person has whispered into their ear that a Superwave is on its way, which of course, was totally unsubstantiated information, but given in order to ferment rumour and disinformation. I tried hard to deal with my irritation with the Camelot interviewers who at times, asked completely stupid questions and seemed to keep trying to get Paul LaViolette to agree that something was on its way. At times, Paul is interupted whilst making an explanation with questions that were out of context and/or even irrelevant. One example occurred when he was trying to explain Superwaves and climatic influences [45:00], but he was interupted [52:00] with a question about pole shifts and crustal displacements. Another happened when he was talking about the evidence of a magnetic pole shift being caused by a massive Coronal Mass Ejection, the female interviewer stated, "so you are saying that the sinking of Atlantis was resulted from that?" Paul LaViolette was very calm in his response to this display of dumbness. The interview at times was truly cringeworthy and I think the worst point was when Paul LaViolette was talking about finding traces of gold in an ice-core and the woman asked if it was mineable and starting talking about Zecharia Sitchin and the Anunnaki....terrible. The saying is that a little knowlege is a dangerous thing.... I will admit I gave up at [01:36:00] because it had got unbearable and you could see that interviewers were frustrated that they not getting what they wanted. Personally, I wished that Paul LaViolette had been filmed doing a lecture for the general public instead with some good camera work, which was lacking here. The most important aspect of Paul LaViolette's work is that he is a top class scientist who understands Space Weather, but has is own alternative ideas that can actually be substantiated with hard facts. Planning a trip to Mars? Take plenty of shielding. According to sensors on NASA's ACE (Advanced Composition Explorer) spacecraft, galactic cosmic rays have just hit a Space Age high.
"In 2009, cosmic ray intensities have increased 19% beyond anything we've seen in the past 50 years," says Richard Mewaldt of Caltech. "The increase is significant, and it could mean we need to re-think how much radiation shielding astronauts take with them on deep-space missions."
Galactic cosmic rays come from outside the solar system. They are subatomic particles--mainly protons but also some heavy nuclei--accelerated to almost light speed by distant supernova explosions. Cosmic rays cause "air showers" of secondary particles
when they hit Earth's atmosphere; they pose a health hazard to astronauts; and a single cosmic ray can disable a satellite if it hits an unlucky integrated circuit.
The sun's magnetic field is our first line of defense against these highly-charged, energetic particles. The entire solar system from Mercury to Pluto and beyond is surrounded by a bubble of solar magnetism called "the heliosphere." It springs from the sun's
inner magnetic dynamo and is inflated to gargantuan proportions by the solar wind. When a cosmic ray tries to enter the solar system, it must fight through the heliosphere's outer layers; and if it makes it inside, there is a thicket of magnetic fields waiting to scatter and deflect the intruder. [...]Mewaldt lists three aspects of the current solar minimum that are combining to create the perfect storm: 1. The sun's magnetic field is weak. 2. The solar wind is flagging. 3. The current sheet is flattening. [...] "If the flattening continues as it has in previous solar minima, we could see cosmic ray fluxes jump all the way to 30% above previous Space Age highs," predicts Mewaldt.[...] "The space era has so far experienced a time of relatively low cosmic ray activity," says Mewaldt. "We may now be returning to levels typical of past centuries." Comment: This is more confirmation of the New Cosmic Age being driven by Space Weather! I am not aware that NASA have released any prior information about the current sheet flattening, but I would say that it would be very difficult for scientists to predict the impact. Please forget any talk about people being totally protected by the earth's atmosphere, because Extensive Air Showers caused by cosmic rays are being recorded at ground level and scientists were raising eyebrows about the high levels back in 2000. The metaphysical community have been warned to strengthen their energy fields, but it seems the message has gone largely unheeded, so we may be awaiting a massive gamma ray burst that will leave us open to the elements and then we'll see what happens. Personally, I think we are going to get some serious evolutionary sorting out of the wheat from the chaff. Meanwhile, the 2012 Bandwagonistas have missed the implications for evolutionary change, as we enter A New Cosmic Age dominated by Space or the aether and hence why traditional Mayan Elders have talked about a change of sun and a new human. But, I would still be interested to find other lonely individuals who realised what was happening and went to the trouble of getting their beliefs and research published. Comment: There is a major problem in that the general populace and what is far worst, the metaphysical community, do not realise that as we enter a New cosmic Age our planet is being flooded with cosmic radiation. Cosmic rays are already at record highs, but popular metaphysical leaders do not teach how the human energy field relates to spiritual evolution. On 3rd November 2006, Neil Armstrong was given a copy of my book at a rare 1-day seminar where he stated [paraphrased] that when he went to the moon, they did not known anything about Space Weather, but now things have completely changed. Mayan prophecy has now been fulfilled, but the question is: just how many people realise that universal forces will be interrogating every living thing on this planet to see if it is fit enough for a new world? Scientists have already worked out that a magnetic field generated by plasma is the best way to keep a spacecraft safe from the radiation of outerspace, but in metaphysical terms that energy shell is called a Merkabah and when we spiritually evolve then it gets strengthened. On Sept. 2, 1859, at the telegraph office at No. 31 State Street in Boston at 9:30 a.m., the operators’ lines were overflowing with current, so they unplugged the batteries connected to their machines, and kept working using just the electricity coursing through the air.
In the wee hours of that night, the most brilliant auroras ever recorded had broken out across the skies of the Earth. People in Havana and Florida reported seeing them. The New York Times ran a 3,000 word feature recording the colorful event in purple prose.
“With this a beautiful tint of pink finally mingled. The clouds of this color were most abundant to the northeast and northwest of the zenith,” the Times wrote. “There they shot across one another, intermingling and deepening until the sky was painfully lurid. There was no figure the imagination could not find portrayed by these instantaneous flashes.”
As if what was happening in the heavens wasn’t enough, the communications infrastructure just beginning to stretch along the eastern seaboard was going haywire from all the electromagnetism.
“We observed the influence upon the lines at the time of commencing business — 8 o’clock — and it continued so strong up to 9 1/2 as to prevent any business from being done, excepting by throwing off the batteries at each end of the line and working by the atmospheric current entirely!” the astonished telegraph operators of Boston wrote in a statement that appeared in The New York Times later that week."
Comment: This was a MAJOR geomagnetic storm. Experts say if it happened now in our technological world, it would be catastrophic. However... Electricity flowing through the air, that could power machines.... Maybe, this is something we could expect in the future as our environment becomes more electrically charged. CAPE CANAVERAL, Florida, Sep. 1, 2009 (Reuters) — Spacewalking astronauts outside the International Space Station lost touch with ground controllers for 33 minutes on Tuesday when a storm knocked out their radio link.
Spacewalkers Danny Olivas and Nicole Stott kept working outside the International Space Station during the communications blackout under the watchful eyes of their crewmates. "This is no safety of flight issue," said NASA commentator Rob Navias from Mission Control in Houston, which gets its satellite feeds from the shuttle and space station via a ground antenna in White Sands, New Mexico.
Comment: This press release is so vague we have to assume that the 'storm' was probably a substorm induced by space weather which occurs every 3 hours or so and probably unavoidable for such a long spacewalk, but it indicates the tough electrical conditions of lower Earth orbit. "Cosmic rays pour down on Earth like a constant rain. We don't much notice these high-energy particles, but they may have played a role in the evolution of life on our planet.
Some of the mass extinctions identified in the fossil record can be linked to an asteroid impact or increased volcanism, but many of the causes of those ancient die-offs are still open for debate.
"There may have been nearby astronomical goings-on that drastically increased the radiation on Earth," says Brian Fields from the University of Illinois.
A supernova going off 30 light-years away could cause such a jump in radiation on our planet that could directly, or indirectly, wipe out huge numbers of species. Currently researchers are looking for possible evidence for this sort of cosmic foul play. [...] "Every square centimeter on the top of the Earth's atmosphere is hit by several cosmic rays per second," Fields says. "This is forever going on."
None of these "primary" cosmic rays ever reach us on the ground. Instead, they collide with atoms in the upper atmosphere, creating a shower of lower energy "secondary" particles.
Secondary effects:
At sea level, the majority of cosmic ray secondaries are highly penetrating muons. About 10,000 muons pass through our bodies every minute. Some of these muons will ionize molecules as they go through our flesh, occasionally leading to genetic mutations that may be harmful. At present, the average human receives the equivalent of about 10 chest X-rays per year from cosmic rays.We shouldn't be alarmed by this, since it is just part of the natural background radiation under which humans and our ancestors have been exposed to for eons. Indeed, cosmic-ray-induced mutations may sometimes be beneficial.
"It is clear that in some way cosmic rays shaped evolution of organisms on Earth," says Franco Ferrari from the University of Szczecin in Poland."
Comment: Well, since cosmic rays are at record highs, according to NASA, the comments about the evolutionary influence is very pertinent, even though in certain periods of Earth's history, the magnetic field was much much weaker, and cosmic rays would have flooded the planet. The issue we have now though is that according to NASA, we are now headed in the same direction as Earth's shielding is fading fast and becoming unstable. The 10,000 muon hits per minute is very surprising and reinforces metaphysical messages warning those who are interested in their spiritual evolution to strengthen their energy fields. "Electrical shocks that each of us experience when touching doorknobs or car doors after a long trip are caused by vast numbers of electrons, which you have collected before touching the surface. The shock is not strong in itself, but it can be very frightening. However, when it appears during spacewalks, as astronauts attempt for example to grab a tool, or touch the outer walls of the International Space Station (ISS), it can be a serious problem, with disastrous consequences. A newly installed device now monitors the level of static electricity on the orbital lab, to prevent such incidents, Space reports.
Because the ISS travels at the upper limits of the atmosphere, it mostly moves through the ionosphere, a layer that is filled with ions, or electrically charged atoms. As it orbits the planet, the station too scraps off electrons from these atoms, which gather in static charges on its outer surfaces, and on cargo bay doors. Space scientists have tried for a long time to predict exactly what type of influence these electrons could have on spacewalkers or incoming ships, but their results have been inconclusive."
Comment: This is more confirmation of the electrical nature of space that for many decades was believed to be a cold, dark, empty and lifeless place. Due to Space Weather and other scientific discoveries, it is becoming very clear that this understanding of space was completely wrong. Space is filled with magnetic and electric fields, the ingredients for life, organic molecules, are emited from star-forming regions of space and viruses can be manufactured in comet tails. It is a fact that bacteria mutates due to radiation and becomes extremely aggressive and 'unofficially' plasma entities exist that have evolved on a completely different evolutionary path to carbon based lifeforms. Satellites experience the disruptive effects of energetic charged particles and electrical charging across the satellite structure during various weather conditions. Astronauts are vulnerable to energetic radiation that may occur at space station altitudes. Navigation signals from global positioning satellites are affected by irregularities in the ionosphere that develop under some conditions, and massive disruption in electric power distribution systems can be triggered by geomagnetic storms, stated Robert Clauer, professor of electrical and computer engineering at Virginia Tech. AURORA SURPRISE: Sometimes the auroras are so bright, you just can't sleep. "I was up all night on July 21st, but it was totally worth it!" says photographer Zoltan Kenwell of Chip Lake, Alberta. This is what kept him awake: "It was a very impressive show that lasted 4.5 hours!" says Kenwell. Forecasters did not predict this display. It began on when a seemingly minor solar wind stream hit Earth's magnetic field. The minor hit turned into a not-so-minor display because a crack opened in Earth's magnetic field, allowing solar wind to pour in and fuel the storm. Northern Lights descended as far south as the Dakotas, Montana, Iowa and Wisconsin. The solar wind is still blowing, but the crack has closed, bringing an end to the lights. Comment:There is a lot going on with solar eclipses, noctilucent clouds and now "surprise" auroras caused when the Earths magnetic field opens up with a 'crack' for reasons we don't understand. In a paper published in the June 12 issue of Physical Review Letters, NASA scientists say they may have found the answer. "The energy source is turbulence," says co-author Melvyn Goldstein, chief of the Geospace Physics Laboratory at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center, Greenbelt, Md. "The sun heats the solar wind by stirring it up."
It's a bit like stirring your coffee--in reverse. When you stir your morning cup of Joe, the coffee cools off. But when the sun stirs the solar wind, the solar wind heats up. [...] The key data came from a quartet of European spacecraft collectively known as Cluster, launched in 2000 to study the giant bubble of magnetism that surrounds Earth. The magnetosphere protects our planet from solar wind and cosmic rays. It contains the Van Allen radiation belts, auroras, and giant electrical "ring currents" of staggering power. Cluster spends much of its time inside the magnetosphere, where the spacecraft can study the wide variety of phenomena at work there."
Comment: The start of this report was so embarrassingly bad that I thought I would ignore it, but I have changed my mind as it goes to show why intelligent people who can think for themselves are paying attention to Electric/Plasma Universe theories. Note the highlighted section here, it's only recently that scientists have been forced to acknowledge that space is filled with electric fields and magnetic fields due to the existence of plasma that was once invisible to scientific instruments. This is a good quote: "People tend to think that space is a quiet place with relatively little activity. Over the years, we have come to realize that this is not true." "For decades, scientists have thought that the highest-energy cosmic rays—those packing up to a million trillion electronvolts—were almost exclusively protons. But data from the Pierre Auger Observatory in Argentina, the world’s top facility dedicated to ultra-high-energy cosmic rays, could tell a startlingly different story. At the International Cosmic Ray Conference, held from July 7 to 15 in Lodz, Poland, Auger scientists are presenting data that raises the possibility that some of those super-speedy cosmic bullets could actually be iron nuclei.
“It would surprise a lot of people if some of these particles turned out to be iron,” says Hank Glass, an Auger collaborator at Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory. While scientists can imagine mechanisms that would accelerate protons up to nearly the speed of light, they have no idea where ultra-energetic iron nuclei could originate.
“Then again,” Glass adds, “nature is full of surprises.”"
Comment: In my book, I outlined the theory of Multidimensional Reality that explained the source of our reality as being an octahedron or diamond. I was totally enthralled to discover this theory, which is in line with the best of metaphysical tradition and the belief of the most repected mystics that have ever lived. "Reports circulating in the Kremlin today are saying that Russian Air Force Commanders have issued warnings to all of their aircraft to exercise “extreme caution” during flights “in and around” an area defined as Latitude 17 North [North Atlantic Ocean] Latitude 3 South [South Atlantic Ocean] to Latitude 8 North [Indian Ocean] Latitude 19 South [Indian Ocean] between the Longitudes of 46 West, 33 West, 46 East and 33 East, and which covers the greater part of the African Tectonic Plate. The reason for this unprecedented warning, these reports state, are the rapid formations of “geomagnetic storms” emanating from the boundaries of the African Tectonic Plate that due to their intensity have caused the loss of two major passenger aircraft during the past month leaving nearly 300 men, women and children dead.
The first aircraft to be downed by this phenomenon was Air France passenger flight 447, and which these reports say that upon encountering one of these geomagnetic storms, on June 1st, near the western boundary of the African Tectonic Plate close to Brazil’s Fernando de Noronha Islands, was “completely annihilated” causing the deaths of 216 passengers and 12 crew members as their plane plunged in pieces into the Atlantic Ocean.
The second aircraft to be downed occurred on the eastern boundary of the African Tectonic Plate today when another of these geomagnetic storms slammed from the sky a Yemeni Airways flight to the Island Nation of Comoros in the Indian Ocean of which of the 153 passengers and crew aboard, only 1 “miracle child” has been rescued, so far. To the catastrophic events occurring within the African Tectonic Plate it has been known for over a year with the reporting of a “new ocean” forming in Ethiopia, and as we can read as reported by Nature News Service:
“Although the birth of an ocean is an extremely rare phenomenon on the largest of historical scales, the geophysics is currently experiencing such an event. Even more dazzling, this occurs in one of the Earth's most inhospitable and arid regions, the Afar Depression in Ethiopia.
The African continent is literally unstitching itself apart just like the sleeve of an old shirt, along the area known as the East African Rift, which traverses it beginning with the southern end of the Red Sea, going through Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya, Tanzania and Mozambique. The molten lava beneath the Earth's surface makes it thin by constantly pushing against it, and eventually breaks it and tears it apart.”"
Comment: Do we have a Space Weather smoking gun? OK, I have never been sure of this source of information but when it's related to geophysics and not politics, I tend to be more interested in what's being released. Therefore, we have to ignore the embroidery that is evident in this article. The scientific facts are that the birth of a new ocean is a major geological event. At the same time, in November 2007 NASA reported unusual space weather over Africa and electromagnetic emissions called an "ion plume" where our scientists don't fully understand the origin. The report states: "Researchers liken the plumes to smoke billowing out of a factory smokestack—except instead of ordinary ash and dust, ion plumes are made of electrified gas floating so high above ground they come in contact with space itself. "The plumes appear during geomagnetic storms and they can interfere with satellite transmissions, airline navigation and radio communications," says Fuller-Rowell. Indeed, it is their effect on GPS signals that led to the discovery of plumes over North America just a few years ago." See Strange Space Weather over Africa. At the same time, we also know that aircraft can be effected by very strange atmospheric conditions and we have the incident where air passengers that were not wearing seatbelts ended up floating in the air and many were seriously hurt; see report from February 2009, Turbulence Warning: 45 hurt as US-bound plane hits turbulence over Japan . It must be obvious to many that atmospheric conditions are deteriorating very quickly as even the U.S. Airforce admit GPS is 'breaking down' and we can only assume that as many reports attest, GPS "technical difficulties" are related to the turbulence of the ionosphere that cannot be compensated for by any kind of technique. When we look at the bigger picture, metaphysical sources have been emphatic that low frequency electromagnetic emissions that act as precursors to earthquakes degrade the human energy field. Hence, we have been warned that protection is necessary and various sources are encouraging the use of sacred geometry and activation of the octahedron energy field. After 8 years of research, I am quite familiar with the supporting science and metaphysical concepts. When we consider the formation of a new ocean basin, one can only speculate that these electromagnetic emissions are on another completely different scale. Here, it is necessary to point out that NASA have stated that this is a NEW geophysical phenomena and there is a lack of sensors to detect these "ion plumes", so once again, we are in unchartered territory. "WASHINGTON -- The Obama administration plans to kill a controversial Bush administration spy satellite program at the Department of Homeland Security, according to officials familiar with the decision. The program came under fire from its inception two years ago. Democratic lawmakers said it would lead to domestic spying. The program would have provided federal, state and local officials with extensive access to spy-satellite imagery — but no eavesdropping capabilities— to assist with emergency response and other domestic-security needs, such as identifying where ports or border areas are vulnerable to terrorism. It would have expanded an Interior Department satellite program, which will continue to be used to assist in natural disasters and for other limited security purposes such as photographing sporting events. Comment:Well, obviously the thinking is; what's the point of a spy satellite program when GPS is on it's way out? The media have been remarkably quiet when you consider that military systems are likely to be crippled unless there are other systems in place that we know nothing about and even then, the same "extreme" conditions in space will be effecting those critical satellite dependent guidance systems too. Comment: The headline is a little misleading here because what the scientists are describing is the Earth's reaction to the ferocity of the solar wind and any space weather that might be occuring. From the description, it almost seems like the equivalent of an electromagnetic pulse that has been usually termed a "substorm" that happen daily, older reports have stated 3/4 times a day but here we are being told that these events take place every three hours. Plasma is the basic primordial and spiritual energy of the universe and Earth is capturing ever increasing amounts of this highly charged energy and using it to evolve. Humanity as a whole is also being effected by the increasing amounts of this energy. As some metaphysical folk are consciously choosing to spiritually evolve, their evolution will be faster. "Delaware researchers in Sweden have launched a giant balloon taller than a football field that is now flying at the edge of space to collect data on cosmic rays -- the most super-charged particles in the universe. The balloon, which is 396 feet tall and 459 feet in diameter when fully inflated, was set aloft at 4:34 a.m. on May 17 from Esrange Space Center near Kiruna, Sweden, in the Arctic Circle. It is flying at a speed of more than 40 knots and an altitude of nearly 27 miles. Its payload of cosmic ray detectors, housed in a pressurized shell, will be cut free in northwestern Canada and float back down to Earth on a parachute, and then secured and recovered, likely by helicopter."
Comment:I don't think this experiment will fail to catch cosmic rays since NASA and other scientific institutions have informed the world that cosmic rays are increasing. In infact, in March 2009, NASA stated, "Cosmic rays at near record-high levels". This must be in comparison with previous solar minimum's on record but about 40,000 years ago, the Earth's magnetic field dropped to about 10% of today's value and the Earth was flooded with cosmic radiation for about 3,000 years. According to Swiss scientists we experienced climate and evolutionary change, just like what we are seeing now. However, now we are being told that the Earth's magnetic field which acts as our protection from cosmic rays, sometimes parts like a pair of curtains, (in July 2007, this was measured as being 4 Earth's wide and 7 Earth's deep, but in media reports, scientists did not state for how long this took place but previous "cracks" have been measured that were at open for at least 9 hours) and therefore we are getting huge influxes of cosmic radiation which can be compared to an electromagnetic flood of biblical proportions. Comment:Well, those who have been following this blog for some time, will know that I have clearly stated that our whole satellite communication infrastructure is under threat from Space Weather. Yet, even I am totally and utterly amazed with reports that the U.S. GPS system is now so fragile that it could shut down as early as 2010. It is obvious that something major has happened, as it was planned that all airplanes will be using GPS for navigation by 2012, see quote below. At this time, we can only speculate that insurance costs for satellites have rocketed, excuse the pun. The technical difficulties are probably associated with spacecraft charging due to the new brutal electrical conditions in space, causing sensitive satellite components to age quickly, combined with the recent disaster of military satellites crashing creating a massive problem of satellite controllers trying to out-manoeuvre debris and redundant satellites ie space junk. Obviously, there is also the issue of our planet being assailed with Near Earth Objects [NEOs], asteroids and meteorites, but reports have now started to mention 'tiny' space rocks which are apparently a new factor. So, I imagine that there will be quite a shocked reaction from business users and one would anticipate there will be more reports to follow. Please consider the following quote from the infamous US National Academy of Sciences report: Severe Space Weather Events--Understanding Societal and Economic Impacts, "For the spacecraft industry, however, the primary approach to mitigating the effects of space weather is to design satellites to operate under extreme environmental conditions to the maximum extent possible within cost and resource constraints. These technologies will come on line incrementally over the next 15 years as new GPS satellites become operational. Comment:OK, this article is quite apocalyptic but as we now know, quite possible if we get some extreme space Weather. I really don't think the extremes will be before 2012, but the Sun is confusing everybody, so who knows what will happen. However, as the Earth's cosmic environment is rapidly changing and the Earth's magnetic field now dramatically morphing, if we do get a burst of galactic energy in the form of a superwave then that would set the sun off and anything could happen. Practically, the main priority is a clean water supply, so people need to be prepared to filter their own water to give them a chance as power failures will stop water being pumped into homes. It's good that the mainstream are starting to warn people, I feel quite relieved about that. Comment: Here, we have news article based on the Space community's hellish NAS report that someone describes as "fair and balanced.....". For quite some time I have been wondering if I was living on the same planet as everyone else, but now I know there are at least a few who may not have a metaphysical understanding, but at least they are far more aware than Joe Public of what could happen if solar cycle 24 gets violent. Comment: For the metaphysical folk, it must be now much easier to understand why there was such a fuss in the effort around 07-07-07 – 17-07-07, the period of Al Gore's "Live Earth", Tom Kenyon's Hathor inspired "Planetary Creatrix" and Shelley Yate's "Fire The Grid". According to The Hathor's, the Earth's grid or powerlines were reset to a higher "bandwidth" so that when the planet was hit with massive blasts of energy, it could cope with the higher volume of energy. We were told that this was the last opportunity to do this work. At the time, I watched with great interest and was amazed to see the NOAA data showing the Earth bathed in X-rays for about a week! The Hathors have stated that what happens now is mostly up to geophysics, which made me conclude that we have just not done enough to stop some major catastrophes. Now folks, the problem is the that our technological infrastructure is not designed to cope with billions of tons of highly charged sub-atomic plasma. At the same time, our spiritual leaders have generally failed to explain that we have changed our destiny since 1987 and the world is facing a spiritual revolution. The most important thing is to spiritually evolve and strengthen your energy field which will allow you to cope and thrive in the new "terms and conditions" that are now being imposed on our planet. Those with high consciousness, are already downloading the new light codes and updating their DNA and acting as beacons, broadcasting the new morphogenetic templates for humanity. Comment: Watch Out! Severe Space Weather on the way! Scientists finally admit there will be an impact on humans! Well, this report suggests space scientists believe we could experience "severe" space weather with a "devastating" impact on modern societies. This report even states there is an impact on humans which NASA et al. are now finally prepared to admit. The predictions for the Sun by NASA solar scientists Dipakti et al. was a late start with 50% increase in solar activity from the previous Solar Cycle 23. Well, we have a very late start to Solar Cycle 24 and so the Sun could now be gearing up for some extreme activity. Comment: I was amazed to see this documentary-drama on mainstream UK TV on the 28th December. It was originally made for Discovery Channel and has been placed on Youtube in it's entirety. It starts off by informing people that there are occasional storms from the Sun that consists of a blast of electrical charged particles from the sun but it states they have "little effect" living things, which cannot possibly be true or else astronauts would not have to run for cover during solar storms when they are aboard the International Space Station. Then it goes on to dramatically depict the consequences of a massive Coronal Mass Ejection from the Sun burning out transformers and taking down national power grids around the world. With the recent announcements from NASA it seems that this has to be now seriously considered as a distinct possibility. Note the comment in part 3 about "super big" geomagnetic storms only being produced by solar magnetism with a largely southward component, this is now out of date. It seems that we are now experiencing certain magnetic configurations resulting in the Earth lowering her shields to large blasts of space weather in the form of coronal mass ejections with any magnetic polarity. Also the Sun is still in a funk, the peak of solar cycle 24 will be in 2012, if not later. Meanwhile, the citizens of planet Earth are largely unaware that we are facing crunch time.... Comment: This physorg.com report gives slightly more technical details on the NASA THEMIS discovery. It highlights the issue of our scientists being faced with the new phenomena of Space Weather and previously unknown geomagnetic conditions that completely confound our scientific understanding, such that current theory has to be scrapped and replaced to match the hard evidence of observational data. The observation of a massive tear 7 Earths wide by 4 Earths high is certainly incredible and in the future, it means Earth will be exposed to geomagnetic storms of billions of tons of plasma, highly charged sub-atomic particles that will result in Earth becoming increasingly electrified and spiritualised. NASA's five THEMIS spacecraft have discovered a breach in Earth's magnetic field ten times larger than anything previously thought to exist. Solar wind can flow in through the opening to "load up" the magnetosphere for powerful geomagnetic storms. But the breach itself is not the biggest surprise. Researchers are even more amazed at the strange and unexpected way it forms, overturning long-held ideas of space physics.
"At first I didn't believe it," says THEMIS project scientist David Sibeck of the Goddard Space Flight Center. "This finding fundamentally alters our understanding of the solar wind-magnetosphere interaction. [..] "The opening was huge—four times wider than Earth itself," says Wenhui Li, a space physicist at the University of New Hampshire who has been analyzing the data. Li's colleague Jimmy Raeder, also of New Hampshire, says "10^27 particles per second were flowing into the magnetosphere—that's a 1 followed by 27 zeros. This kind of influx is an order of magnitude greater than what we thought was possible." [...] The size of the breach took researchers by surprise. "We've seen things like this before," says Raeder, "but never on such a large scale. The entire day-side of the magnetosphere was open to the solar wind." The circumstances were even more surprising. Space physicists have long believed that holes in Earth's magnetosphere open only in response to solar magnetic fields that point south. The great breach of June 2007, however, opened in response to a solar magnetic field that pointed north.
"To the lay person, this may sound like a quibble, but to a space physicist, it is almost seismic," says Sibeck. "When I tell my colleagues, most react with skepticism, as if I'm trying to convince them that the sun rises in the west." Here is why they can't believe their ears: The solar wind presses against Earth's magnetosphere almost directly above the equator where our planet's magnetic field points north. Suppose a bundle of solar magnetism comes along, and it points north, too. The two fields should reinforce one another, strengthening Earth's magnetic defenses and slamming the door shut on the solar wind. In the language of space physics, a north-pointing solar magnetic field is called a "northern IMF" and it is synonymous with shields up! "So, you can imagine our surprise when a northern IMF came along and shields went down instead," says Sibeck. "This completely overturns our understanding of things." Northern IMF events don't actually trigger geomagnetic storms, notes Raeder, but they do set the stage for storms by loading the magnetosphere with plasma. A loaded magnetosphere is primed for auroras, power outages, and other disturbances that can result when, say, a CME (coronal mass ejection) hits. The years ahead could be especially lively. Raeder explains: "We're entering Solar Cycle 24. For reasons not fully understood, CMEs in even-numbered solar cycles (like 24) tend to hit Earth with a leading edge that is magnetized north. Such a CME should open a breach and load the magnetosphere with plasma just before the storm gets underway. It's the perfect sequence for a really big event."
Sibeck agrees. "This could result in stronger geomagnetic storms than we have seen in many years.""
Comment: Gaia is letting down her defences to cosmic forces! It's now SHIELDS DOWN! "Observations made by NASA instruments onboard an Air Force satellite have shown that the boundary between the Earth's upper atmosphere and space has moved to extraordinarily low altitudes. These observations were made by the Coupled Ion Neutral Dynamics Investigation (CINDI) instrument suite, which was launched aboard the U.S. Air Force's Communication/Navigation Outage Forecast System (C/NOFS) satellite on April 16, 2008. [...] CINDI's first discovery was, however, that the ionosphere was not where it had been expected to be. During the first months of CINDI operations the transition between the ionosphere and space was found to be at about 260 miles (420 km) altitude during the nighttime, barely rising above 500 miles (800 km) during the day. These altitudes were extraordinarily low compared with the more typical values of 400 miles (640 km) during the nighttime and 600 miles (960 km) during the day. The height of the ionosphere/space transition is controlled in part by the amount of extreme ultraviolet energy emitted by the Sun and a somewhat contracted ionosphere could have been expected because C/NOFS was launched during a minimum in the 11-year cycle of solar activity. However, the size of the actual contraction caught investigators by surprise. In fact, when they looked back over records of solar activity, they found that C/NOFS had been launched during the quietest solar minimum since the space age began. This extraordinary circumstance is providing an unparalleled opportunity to study the connection between the interior dynamics of the Sun and the response of the Earth's space environment."
Comment: Well, the Sun is now very inactive whilst in a deep solar minimum, therefore the boundary between the ionosphere and space is not being inflated by chemical reactions caused by UV radiation from the Sun, which varies 6-8% in amount, when the Sun is active. Even so, I am wondering if there are major implications for the shielding properties of a thin ionosphere, especially as the planet is now more exposed to galactic cosmic rays. The ionosphere can be compared to the Earth's skin providing us with some protection against direct cosmic influences, so it seems this is another layer of Earth's defence that is 'evaporating'. Certainly, with the numerous atmospheric and geomagnetic changes taking place, there can be no doubt, that all life on Earth will be getting a thorough cosmic inspection. Now, it's easier to see why there are some really crackpot geoengineering schemes being proposed to place a shield in space, but it seems those who understand their relationship with universal forces and the need for spiritual evolution are much more likely to cope with the new terms and conditions for living on planet Earth. A magnetic portal will open, linking Earth to the sun 93 million miles away. Tons of high-energy particles may flow through the opening before it closes again, around the time you reach the end of the page. "It's called a flux transfer event or 'FTE,'" says space physicist David Sibeck of the Goddard Space Flight Center. "Ten years ago I was pretty sure they didn't exist, but now the evidence is incontrovertible." Indeed, today Sibeck is telling an international assembly of space physicists at the 2008 Plasma Workshop in Huntsville, Alabama, that FTEs are not just common, but possibly twice as common as anyone had ever imagined." "Several speakers at the Workshop have outlined how FTEs form: On the dayside of Earth (the side closest to the sun), Earth's magnetic field presses against the sun's magnetic field. Approximately every eight minutes, the two fields briefly merge or "reconnect," forming a portal through which particles can flow. The portal takes the form of a magnetic cylinder about as wide as Earth. The European Space Agency's fleet of four Cluster spacecraft and NASA's five THEMIS probes have flown through and surrounded these cylinders, measuring their dimensions and sensing the particles that shoot through. "They're real," says Sibeck."
Comment: The formation of these "magnetic portals" or Birkeland currents is very much dependent on the region of space, the amount of plasma (ionised particles) and the strength of the local magnetic field. So, this report tells us that there now exists a quick delivery mechanism for particles from the Sun to the Earth, proving that those who still believe that the Earth is isolated in space are as ignorant as those who once thought the Earth was flat. Anyway, this has major implications for when the Earth's atmosphere is suddenly struck by highly charged particles. Therefore Space Weather is now a real issue and of interest for those who are interested in staying balanced, in extreme geomagnetic conditions. "University of Waterloo scientist says that cosmic rays are a key cause for expanding the hole in the ozone layer over the South Pole — and predicts the largest ozone hole will occur in one or two weeks. Qing-Bin Lu, a professor of physics and astronomy who studies ozone depletion, said that it was generally accepted for more than two decades that the Earth's ozone layer is depleted by chlorine atoms produced by sunlight-induced destruction of chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) in the atmosphere. But more and more evidence now points to a new theory that the cosmic rays (energy particles that originate in space) play a major role." Comment:Here we have another example of a cosmic caused phenomenon that has been wrongly attributed to human (anthropogenic) causes. It seems that in this report, scientists are attempting to set the record straight by linking the ozone hole to cosmic rays, whilst others also cite the decline of the Earth's magnetic field. The destruction of the ozone layer is held in check by the horizontal component of the Earth's magnetic field which is strongest at the equator and this explains why the ozone hole is over the polar regions (70% Antarctica, 30% Artic). Theory would dictate that the mid-latitude northern hemisphere, the location of the most industrialised and polluted parts of the world, where ozone destroying man-made chemicals, chlorofluorocarbon (CFC) compounds and ozone depleting substances (ODS) are to be found, should be the location of the ozone hole, NOT Antartica which is one of the most pristine places left on the planet. Thus, we can see why the Montreal Protocol an agreement by some countries to ban/reduce CFCs and ODS and ratified in 1989, has made absolutely no difference to the behaviour of the ozone layer and we can only anticipate that as Earth continues to lose it's protection against galactic cosmic rays, the ozone hole will continue to seasonally expand. Sun's protective 'bubble' is shrinking The protective bubble around the sun that helps to shield the Earth from harmful interstellar radiation is shrinking and getting weaker, Nasa scientists have warned. "Dr David McComas, principal investigator on the IBEX mission, said: "It is a fascinating interaction that our sun has with the galaxy surrounding us. This million mile an hour wind inflates this protective bubble that keeps us safe from intergalactic cosmic rays. "With less pressure on the inside, the interaction at the boundaries becomes weaker and the heliosphere as a whole gets smaller." If the heliosphere continues to weaken, scientists fear that the amount of cosmic radiation reaching the inner parts of our solar system, including Earth, will increase. This could result in growing levels of disruption to electrical equipment, damage satellites and potentially even harm life on Earth. But Dr McComas added that it was still unclear exactly what would happen if the heliosphere continued to weaken or what even what the timescale for changes in the heliosphere are. He said: "There is no imminent danger, but it is hard to know what the future holds. Certainly if the solar wind pressure was to continue to go down and the heliosphere were to almost evaporate then we would be in this sea of galactic cosmic rays. That could have some large effects."
Comment: Dr McComas is braver than me and has dared to suggest that the heliosphere might "evaporate". Yet, in presenting the facts mixed with speculation by NASA scientists, the general public are not being told that this is happening in conjunction with galactic cycles and Earth's precession (slow wobble on it's axis that takes approx. 26,000 years) where we are now directly aligning with the center of our galaxy, so we will be fully exposed to galactic space weather. Nevertheless, the world has now received official notification and validation of prophecies by Mayan Elders, that we are entering a New Age dominated by space or the aether. Moreover, the implications are that we will experience tremendous evolutionary change as the Earth is bombarded by increasing amounts of highly electromagnetic sources of energy, as discussed in my book, Tuning the Diamonds: Electromagnetism & Spiritual Evolution. "A test spacecraft for Europe's future satellite-navigation system has been rocked by a surge of space radiation. The incident forced the Giove-B satellite to adopt a "safe mode" for two weeks in which only essential power systems were kept running. European Space Agency (Esa) engineers have brought the satellite back up and are now studying what happened."
Comment:Incredible! The Galileo project has a 3.4 billion euro budget and the satellite gets knocked out for 15 days and there is not a peep in the media for 3 weeks! This article tells us that the Giove-B , and its sister demonstrator Giove-A satellites have been placed in the high-radiation environment of a medium-Earth orbit (MEO), at an altitude of 24,000km and satellite controllers wonder why it gets knocked out! I have not seen any reports of a solar flare or CME around the 9th September 2008, that could have caused this failure but since the Giove-B satellite has only been in orbit since April 2008, launched at the time of a deep solar minimum, it really makes you wonder what will happen when there is some serious space weather. "China has started construction of a facility in the Inner Mongolia autonomous region that can detect solar bursts. Known as the Chinese Spectral Radioheliograph (CSRJ), it will be operated by the National Astronomical Observatories of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.
When completed in 2010, the CSRJ will be able to detect solar flares and forewarn of coronal mass ejections (a plasma consisting primarily of electrons and protons) that can disable satellites and knock out power grids."

"WASHINGTON -- Data from the Ulysses spacecraft, a joint NASA-European Space Agency mission, show the sun has reduced its output of solar wind to the lowest levels since accurate readings became available. The sun's current state could reduce the natural shielding that envelops our solar system."
""Galactic cosmic rays carry with them radiation from other parts of our galaxy," said Ed Smith, NASA's Ulysses project scientist at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif. "With the solar wind at an all-time low, there is an excellent chance the heliosphere will diminish in size and strength. If that occurs, more galactic cosmic rays will make it into the inner part of our solar system."
Comment: Well, if the Universe was going to take the opportunity to blast our planet with galactic cosmic rays, it seems that our defenses are well and truly down to do anything much about it. When I wrote my book, I was very cautious and only quoted NASA's anxiety about heightened solar activity at 2012 and so I emphasised the combination of solar, cosmic and galactic energy driving evolutionary change on Earth. Now if there is a "surge" of galactic energy or even a galactic superwave coming our way, that would coincide with promised increases in energy x 100,000 year on year from 2007 - 2012. Summary: "In a briefing today at NASA headquarters, solar physicists announced that the solar wind is losing power. "The average pressure of the solar wind has dropped more than 20% since the mid-1990s," says Dave McComas of the Southwest Research Institute in San Antonio, Texas. "This is the weakest it's been since we began monitoring solar wind almost 50 years ago." ....Curiously, the speed of the million mph solar wind hasn't decreased much—only 3%. The change in pressure comes mainly from reductions in temperature and density. The solar wind is 13% cooler and 20% less dense. "What we're seeing is a long term trend, a steady decrease in pressure that began sometime in the mid-1990s," explains Arik Posner, NASA's Ulysses Program Scientist in Washington DC. ...."The solar wind isn't inflating the heliosphere as much as it used to," says McComas. "That means less shielding against cosmic rays."
In addition to weakened solar wind, "Ulysses also finds that the sun's underlying magnetic field has weakened by more than 30% since the mid-1990s," says Posner. "This reduces natural shielding even more." Unpublished Ulysses cosmic ray data show that, indeed, high energy (GeV) electrons, a minor but telltale component of cosmic rays around Earth, have jumped in number by about 20%. These extra particles pose no threat to people on Earth's surface. Our thick atmosphere and planetary magnetic field provide additional layers of protection that keep us safe.....Also, there are controversial studies linking cosmic ray fluxes to cloudiness and climate change on Earth. Comment: The Terms and Conditions for Living on Planet Earth Have Changed! The "quality control inspection" is about to start in earnest! The statement about "no threat to people on Earth's surface", is rather misleading and does not take into account the DNA mutations that will be passed down from generation to generation. Comment: This is a recently released coronagraph compilation by NASA for April 2001. Hmmm....I suppose NASA are trying to prepare people, as the current depth of the Sun's slumber must be very worrying.... What's interesting, is that the massive X-rated solar flares were even bigger in 2003, but often the monitoring X-ray detectors could not cope and were often totally blinded. Incidentally, the X-rating was only introduced in the mid 1990s when the activity of the Sun just went off the charts. Who knows what will happen if NASA's own predictions come true for the peak of the next solar cycle which will probably be around 2012.... We live in a world highly dependent on technology which can be disrupted by fluctuating geomagnetic storms. For example the last massive geomagnetic storm in December 2006 (the biggest burst of electromagnetic energy in 30 years), caused effects on GPS that were 10x bigger than ever recorded. "Changes in the sun's magnetic field driven by the solar wind in turn affect the Earth's atmospheric electric currents and magnetic fields, and can cause such disruptive effects as wreaking havoc with the Nation's electric power grid. In addition, the ionization of atmosphere gases by EUV and X-ray irradiation disrupts the high-frequency radio communication and decreases the accuracy of GPS systems. Related phenomena can change the density of the upper atmosphere, increase the drag on satellites in low-Earth orbit, and knock them out of orbit." Comment: Despite the "dead" Sun (virtually no sunspot activity at the moment), scientists are just not taking any chances. Once again, besides astronauts, there is no mention of the impact of Space weather on humans living on Earth, physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually. Comment:There is an "armada" of space probes parked up in space watching the Sun. "This sunspot is like the first robin of spring," said solar physicist Douglas Biesecker of NOAA's Space Weather Prediction Center. "In this case, it's an early omen of solar storms that will gradually increase over the next few years."

"Something strange is happening in the atmosphere above Africa.... The Africa Space Weather Workshop kicked off Nov. 12th with nearly 100 scientists and students in attendance. The strange phenomenon that brings all these people together is the ion plume – "a newly discovered form of space weather," says University of Colorado atmospheric scientist and Workshop co-organizer Tim Fuller-Rowell."
Researchers liken the plumes to smoke billowing out of a factory smokestack—except instead of ordinary ash and dust, ion plumes are made of electrified gas floating so high above ground they come in contact with space itself. "The plumes appear during geomagnetic storms and they can interfere with satellite transmissions, airline navigation and radio communications," says Fuller-Rowell. Indeed, it is their effect on GPS signals that led to the discovery of plumes over North America just a few years ago.

The first official road signs to warn drivers about the dangers of trusting their satellite navigation devices (satnavs) were introduced in a Welsh village. "Some have reported that software glitches have sent drivers down one-way streets or up impassable mountain tracks. One ambulance driver with a faulty satnav drove hundreds of miles in the wrong direction while transferring a patient from one hospital in Ilford east of London to another just eight miles (13km) away."

Using satellite detectors to probe the outer radiation belt, the team found that killer electrons occur extremely unevenly. Such localized peaks in intensity, the researcher said, could only be caused by electromagnetic waves accelerating electrons to "killer" status within the radiation belt."I think we show conclusively they do not come from further out (in space). They are accelerated in the radiation belt itself." Comment: The Killer Electrons are a worry to the satellite communication industry because they kill satellites worth 250-500 million dollars. Russian computers controlling the International Space Station's (ISS) orientation and supply of oxygen and water have failed, Nasa officials say.
Comment:This is the exact same reason why the Russian Mir Space station was abandoned, the computers were being fried over and over again by Spaceweather. Shielding ordinary commercial computers against even the mild radiation of low earth orbit has been officially described by NASA as "futile". The prevailing belief is that if the computer crashes then it can be rebooted. For critical systems like oxygen supply space agencies use special radiation-hardened computer chips which are obviously more expensive to produce. Yet down here on Earth Spaceweather is becoming a problem and software and hardware manufacturers are arguing about who will take responsibility for solving this problem and delivering more expensive robust solutions to the consumers. A CME (Coronal Mass Ejection) is a solar body slam to our high-tech civilization. CMEs begin when the sun launches a billion tons of electrically conducting gas (plasma) into space at millions of miles per hour. A CME cloud is laced with magnetic fields, and CMEs directed our way smash into Earth's magnetic field. If the CME magnetic fields have the correct orientation, they dump energy into Earth's magnetic field, causing magnetic storms. The new method offers as much as one hour advance warning, giving astronauts time to seek shelter and ground controllers time to safeguard their satellites when a storm is approaching. "Solar radiation storms are notoriously difficult to predict-they often take us by surprise," says physicist Arik Posner who developed the technique. "But now we've found a way to anticipate these events." [...] Spacecraft and satellites would also benefit. Subatomic particles striking CPUs and other electronics can cause onboard computers to suddenly reboot or issue nonsense commands. If, say, a satellite operator knows that a storm is coming, he can put his craft in a protective "safe mode" until the storm passes. Comment:It just amazes me that thousands of scientists are busy researching the new phenomena of space weather and the massive impact on our modern technological world, knocking out satellites, generating huge currents that can effect power grids and causing pipeline corrosion. Yet poor Joe Bloggs, the man on the street, is not aware that there is an impact on his consciousness when geomagnetic fields are wildly fluctuating, nevermind that environmental frequencies have already been pumped up, effecting his everyday reactions to emotional events. Do you get that "blue screen of death" on your PC now and then for no reason, requiring you to reboot? Does your Apple give you that infamous fatal error message requiring you to re-boot?
You're not alone. Defective software can certainly cause these events to happen. The hardware industry is now pointing their finger at Microsoft - while Microsoft points their finger right back in a very crafty way.
Comment:Short article here that suggests reasons for the increase in mysterious computer crashes and cosmic rays are cited as a possible cause. Well, car manufacturers have already realised that there is a serious problem with cosmic rays inducing errors in car electronics and here we see that software and hardware manufactuturers would rather point the finger at each other, possibly because of the financial implications of overcoming this problem. Well, our planet is being inundated with galactic cosmic rays in the process of evolutionary change. Extremely high energy particles can set off "extensive air showers" which result in billions of secondary particles arriving at ground level. Interesting that Microsoft's report for engineers was "confidential", I wonder why? |
